Eric Clapton has Sold Out!

Re: Eric Clapton has Sold Out!

I think it's common knowledge that lots of famous players don't actually use the gear they endorse. Eddie continues to use vintage MXR products while endorsing the newer Dunlop ones. Pete Townsend has a signature SG model, yet he mostly uses Strats. I don't think anyone is dumb enough to think a cheap-looking pedal is going to make them sound like Clapton.

Hey if Clapton (or anyone else) sold out - more power to 'em! It's money in their pocket, they're the smart ones.

I agree. Personally, I don't see how this is any different than other endorsements, like the EVH MXR products or the Angus Young signature pickup.

I dont really see aproblem with it as long as he uses one all the time like EVH does other wise it's crap just to make a few bucks.

Re: Eric Clapton has Sold Out!

I think its fair to say it isnt aimed at the serious/vaguely experienced guitarist. I respect Eric for putting money into Crossroads. To me it isnt selling out. Selling out to me is doing something u dont particularly wanna do, only for the money. In the end its only a lil pedal, not something he will actually use. Its not as if he has started a Blink 182 type pop punk band

If the pedal sucks, so be it. As far as Eric selling out, rubbish. He really believes in Crossroads. He has even auctioned off some of his all-time favorite guitars to help. How many of you would auction off your favorite "Blackie" to help a rehab center?

If you don't like the pedal, don't buy it. For that matter, if you wish to make a stand on Clapton selling out, don't buy the Crossroads DVD either.

How can you question his motives?

The Crossroads Centre is a great thing, and is helping many people. I personally have donated money to the cause, and bought the DVD, which, IMHO, is a must have for any player out there. Claptons motives are good, but why endorse/put your name on a pedal that you have never used on any of your recordings, and has nothing to do with any good tone you have ever gotten? and then to have young players think they will get your tone buy buying this pedal, when they will not. That is rubbish. Heck, endorse the Fender Tweed amp that you use, or a Fender Champ Amp that you recorded Layla with.

You seem to be overlooking Digitech's part in this.

I'm sure that if Clapton really wanted a pedal to model his tones, he sure as hell wouldn't have gone with Digitech. He would've gone with a boutique pedal maker like someone else said, or at least a respected modeling company like Line 6 (disregarding the Spider 2's ;) ). What can you conclude from this? That it was Digitech that approached him about it.

Clapton wanted to help out his Crossroads Center. Digitech wanted to get money using Clapton's name. Clapton probably realized that such an easy endorsement could get a lot of money for the Center. Had Fender approached him about having a signature amp, he probably would've accepted under the same conditions. But he already has a Fender Signature Strat. What're they going to do, make a whole signature line?

I wouldn't lay the blame on Clapton for something that I suspect was mainly Digitech's doing.

Presumably, Clapton being Clapton, himself, he wouldn't need a pedal to model... himself :laugh2:
