Ernie Ball FVH Bridge Pickup replacement...

Re: Ernie Ball FVH Bridge Pickup replacement...

hmmm it's either a JB or Custom, no?

I don't think there is anything much closer than a JB. The CC is too spongy.

Good question.

Thanx,
Ya... JB seems to be the logical choice.
I did mean the EVH Music Man for anyone else...
Running on very little sleep!!

Re: Ernie Ball FVH Bridge Pickup replacement...

JB.

The Dimarzio in the EVH has plenty of power but it is definitely not a distortion class pickup.

I've always thought the CC would make a great replacement for that guitar though.

Re: Ernie Ball FVH Bridge Pickup replacement...

The CC is the closest production SD pup to his sound from that era. A Custom/Distortion hybrid is the only thing that I've heard that's closer.

The Stock Dimarzio's sound nothing like a CC IMO. They VERY hot and have a harsh treble bite. The CC is thick and smooth...

I don't know anything about what the Dimarzios sound like, as I've never even seen one of those guitars in person. I'm only making comparison to EVH's sound from that era. I should have made myself more clear. ;)

Re: Ernie Ball FVH Bridge Pickup replacement...

Those DiMarzios sound nothing like what is in the Duncan line, plain and simple. If you're looking for a replacement, get the Tone Zone.

You can go further with the Tone Zone and pull out the metal screw bar retainer and make sure the "air gap" remains. Most newer DiMarzios have the magnet glued with an adhesive so all you have to do is remove this retainer bar. Doing this will make it sound exactly like the stock EBMM EVH pickup.

WICKED LESTER (forum member) has done this mod and can do it for you if you wish for a small fee.

"Exactly"?
Wow...

Re: Ernie Ball FVH Bridge Pickup replacement...

The stock pickup in the Music Man has hardly any treble at all.

It's EQ curve is something like 9/8/4 bass/mid/treble

It doesn't have any "harsh" frequencies, so it may not sound like a "distortion-class" pickup, but it's way, WAAAAAY hotter and more powerful than any of the Custom line. Case closed. It's got a resistance of 17k. It's all bass. Too much bass, IMO.

It doesn't sound like any "era" of VH, IMO, except for the crappy ones (Unlawful, Balance, etc.)
