es175 neck pup

Hi, I've got a 2006 175 and I want to swap out the HB for a p90 in the neck but the array of options is boggling. Phat Cat? P Rail? Kinman p90 Bucker? Lollar HB size p90? Any others?
I'd love to hear from anyone who has tried this already. My other jazzbox is a d'Angelico with a floating KA mini HB so I'm looking for something gutsier than that, but more transparency than the HBs I've got now.

At the moment I'm leaning towards a p rail for the 3-in-1 option - does that require another toggle switch?

Thanks for any advice!

I am considering HB size P90s on my Jazzabilly box too. I'll be watching the discussion.
I really like the Kinman ones based in the demos. But they are sooooo expensive !!!!!

Re: es175 neck pup

You can control a P-Rails with a pair of push-pull pots if you want. That'd give you four sounds, but you'll probably only want the rail, P-90, and parallel (sort of PAF-ish) options. Series wiring is too hot in the neck position of my SG, so I can hardly imagine it in a 175. A Phat Cat would also be a good option; they sound great for clean tones in a semi hollow, so I can only imagine they'd be better in a 175.

Edit: I completely forgot to mention Triple Shot mounting rings. I don't know if the cosmetics are a deal-breaker, but they're definitely the easiest way to control the wiring options for one or more P-Rails.

+1 to Triple shots with a prails

To only play jazz though I would probably look into lower output P90s.

Re: es175 neck pup

I have only heard Phat Cats - so I'll go with those.

That said - yes, many options in that area these days.

Is the p rail p90 quite hot then?

The Triple Shot rings are a great idea. Is it worth trying one of those to coil tap the existing HB?

I had it for a brief period of time. I felt the p90 was overwound and didn't like the A5. I swapped it for an A2 and still then I wasn't sold. I have a prails in another guitar I use for rock and love it but for jazz it didn't work for me. Again, for me YMMV :)

Triple shots are great only if you plan to use them :) for a normal HB I rarely use more than two sounds: series and either split or parallel so a push pull does it for me. If you use more it's definitely useful. I think it makes more sense with unbalanced HBs.

You can also consider lollar makes a p90 sized Charlie Christian pup. I haven't played one in a while, but I do remember them being one of my favorite. There are many sound clips and reviews out there if you want to check then out.

I wouldn't say it's hot, but it isn't terribly mellow. In terms of wind it's a pretty typical vintage P-90 but with some A5 attitude thrown in. The Phat Cat is definitely more mellow; in fact I replaced mine with P-Rails for that extra attitude.

Triple Shots would work fine with your existing humbucker as long as it has 4-conductor wiring. However most Gibson humbuckers only have single conductor cable with a braided shield.

Re: es175 neck pup

I'd opt for more of a Phat Cat, especially if you are using flatwounds.

Re: es175 neck pup

Thanks very much for all the suggestions. In the end I went with a KA Convertible on my luthier's recommendation and I'm very happy with it - exactly the tone I was looking for!
