ESP Eclipse Pickup Replacement

Good afternoon -

I am planning on removing my Active EMG pickups and going with passive seymour duncan humbuckers. I was considering a JB '59 in the bridge and Pearly Gates in the neck.

My questions are as follows:

1. do these pickups compliment one another
2. when converting from active to passive, what components do i need to replace (e.g., input jack, tone/volume knobs)

Thanks for your assistance,
Roger

you need to get new pots and a new output jack, the switch can usually stay

Re: ESP Eclipse Pickup Replacement

All you'd have to change are the pots, since actives take a much lower value pot than passives, usually 25K or 50K vs 250K or 500K.

The jack can stay, it's just a stereo jack where the third prong/2nd hot is used as a switch for the batteries when you plug the guitar in. Make the connection, you've got power, take it out, your battery is not draining.

Re: ESP Eclipse Pickup Replacement

Well, the JB and the '59 are 2 different pickups. Either should work well in the bridge with a PG in the neck, but the '59 is designed to be more of a vintage PAF sound while the JB is a hot rodded humbucker with a spike in the upper mids therefore a lot of "cut".

Re: ESP Eclipse Pickup Replacement

I do like the JB as a neck pickup, and usually keep it wired/switched either in parallel or split.

The JB's "spike" can be tamed with a 250K Volume pot.

Alternatively, you can make a hybrid out of the JB and 59 and put them both in the guitar.

Re: ESP Eclipse Pickup Replacement

so JB and 59 it is. Thanks, Dumb question... do i need 4 conductor wire or 1? I see those as options

Re: ESP Eclipse Pickup Replacement

so i want the 59 in bridge. what's good in the neck?

What do you want from a bridge pickup... and a neck pickup? Do you want them similar or different in EQ? High, medium or vintage output?

Re: ESP Eclipse Pickup Replacement

Any of the Duncans can be ordered with gold covers. What kind of music do you like? What type of guitarists' sounds? What amp do you have? There are a lot of choices, we just need to narrow them down a bit.

I use a 5150 iii 50 watt head into a 1x12.

I am a fan of classic rock and 80s metal (Ozzy, AC/DC, Savatage, Testament)
