Esquire/Jerry Donahue

My first posting on Duncan's forums:

Jerry Donahue APTL-3JD has made me love my Esquire MIM Classic 50's!

I'm generally not a big pickup swappin' guy. I buy a guitar because I want what it is.

I got the hots for an Esquire some months back. I found a good new one at a price that I could live with.

My gigs are generally the Blues Jam sort of thing and I only bring one of my guitars on a given night and that's what I'll play. My other "Tele" guitars are a Nocaster Relic and a 1976 Telecaster Custom with a Seth Lover Fender humbucker neck pickup. The Tele bridge pickup on my other Teles works well for how I play, but that stock Esquire pickup wasn't doing it for me.

Before I gave up on a great player I replaced the pickup with a more expensive pickup from someone else besides Seymour Duncan. I won't mention the manufacturer because pickups from them made my ES335 a pure joy to play, but that Tele pickup, even though it made a solid improvement, just didn't put that Esquire in the same league as my other Teles.

After some online study I found a good deal for a Jerry Donahue model Duncan pickup and decided on another pickup swap. The JD pickup got me there!! It has a delightful complexity and a killer spank. I knew that guitar had it in there. It just took the right pickup to let the guitar speak freely. :beerchug:

Re: Esquire/Jerry Donahue

Welcome to the forum. You will find that all the guys here are pretty cool and forthcoming with tons of info. You have definetly joined the best forum on the net.

I have a 52RI (among others). It has a vintage 54N and the JD in the Bridge. Great sounding pickup I agree and in combination with the 54 it kills in the middle position. What I like about the JD is it has a heavier amount of midrange and doesn't have that Ice picky brightness to it, yet it retains all the spank you would normally want out of a Tele. I wanted this gituar to sound very traditional so I think this combo is perfect. My other Teles cover the "other" ground when I need to go there. I am more of a Strat guy, but this is my favorite Tele when I need a vintage feel. I have another that I really love a lot too, but that is very different. It has a Duncan Firebird pickup in the Neck and a Hotrail in the Bridge. It can do everything from country to metal!

Re: Esquire/Jerry Donahue

you know, it's kind of amazing that the JD is a production pickup, 'cause it's killer!

it sounds vintage, but will crank when you push it, and twang when you don't

a *GREAT* pickup, one of my favorites

enjoy

Re: Esquire/Jerry Donahue

I've been thinking of that combination for my MIM tele- the JD has always interested me, and the '54 seems like a no brainer.

oh-yeah- Welcome to the forum! This is a great place, and you will find yourself spending more time than you can afford here:smokin:

Re: Esquire/Jerry Donahue

Welcome to the forum! I'm currently thinking about pickups for my Tele project, and the JD is one I'm considering. And don't be afraid to mention other pickup manufacturers names on here. The wolves are almost tame!!!

Well, I kind of feel like it would be dishonorable. I think that maker makes great pickups and I don't want to slight them in any way. They corresponded with me personally concerning pickups for my ES335 and they were spot on. I'm very grateful for that.

Thank you for welcoming me to the gang.

Re: Esquire/Jerry Donahue

Part of the reason why this place is so great, and why Seymour Duncan is so great, is because they pay attention to what's being said in here. It allows them direct access to their customer base, and so they can plan their future products.
