Esquire wiring, GFS switch, help?

I'm trying to wire a tele into an Esquire, and I got one of these switches.

All the switches in diagrams are standard ones with connections on either side. How does this differ?

Re: Esquire wiring, GFS switch, help?

From the outside in on either side is 3, 2, 1, Common, Common, 1, 2, 3. To give reference to your standard spring switch, the "Common" terminals are what goes to the volume pot or output jack. Bridge pickup goes on 1 and neck pickup on 3 and then the other jumper solders and your done.

STEWART MACDONALD said:

The pickup switch selects which pickup's output will be sent to the amp. Virtually all pickup selector switches combine pickups in parallel rather than series. Series connections between pickups are possible with a selector switch, but they often require custom wiring.

3-way and 5-way lever switches
When Leo Fender designed the Telecaster®, he used a rather large lever switch that was commonly used in that era. The original 3-position lever switch has two poles. Fender used the same 3-way switch on the Stratocaster® up until around 1977, when the company realized that players had been catching the switch between positions to get two new sounds. Repairman such as Seymour Duncan filed two new stops into these 3-way switches making the first 5-way switches. After 1977, nearly all Fender Strats came with a 5-way toggle.

Except for the two additional stops, electrically and mechanically there is no difference between the 3 and 5-way lever switches. Refer to Diagram #9 for the lug assignment of these simple but useful switches.

While I appreciate what you've just told me, I'm far too stupid to understand it. Could you elaborate in drooling idiot terms for me?

Re: Esquire wiring, GFS switch, help?

if you have a meter you can check it pretty easily

The switch in the SD Esquire schematic diagram follows the same contact numbering convention as the Stew-Mac 3191 3-way switch in the diagram posted earlier by Fender Punk.

Get a pen and a piece of paper and redraw the SD schematic so that the selector switch contacts are in the same alignment as your SE Asian switch.

Thank you. I'll give it a whirl.

Should I cut the bridged connections between 2-3, C-C-, and 1-2?

Yes. Those are the regular Telecaster jumper connections. You do not need any of them.

Got this back from Jay -

" Just split the switch down the middle - The top four lugs are like the left side of a standard CRL switch, the bottom four are like the right side- Same basic wiring schemes will work."

I'm not exactly clear on what he means.

Jay means this.

He just expressed it differently. :)
