Re: Essential Guitar Upgrades

Strap locks are a must. I've gotta have a properly cut nut and good tuners, but that's not something you know you'll need to replace until you play it a bit. Most everything else varies from guitar to guitar.

Re: Essential Guitar Upgrades

I'm with Zhangliqun on this, thought for thought. And he says it much better than I could.

And, it's my freaking guitar! The thought of some type of obligation to the instrument or some idiotic future buyer who wants it stock is enough to make me want to take a belt sander to the derned thing. I want something that reflects my individuality.

Re: Essential Guitar Upgrades

For me, strap locks are the only mod I'm certain to make on every guitar I own. Only after a setup will I even think about replacing any other parts. I also make sure the existing hardware is in good shape (free of burrs, sharp edges, etc). I play heavy handed with heavy picks, but I can count on the number of strings I've broken on one hand because my guitars have always been setup well, saddles free of sharp edges, well cut nut, etc. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Pick up changes are very common on my axes, but it's my feeling that I can do better and generally not that the stockers are inherently bad (it took me 5 years to pull the stock pups out of my LP). You need to digest the stock tone before swapping them out, IMO. You can't do that when you are convinced from the start that the stock pups are coming out.

Re: Essential Guitar Upgrades

Straplocks are required. I am #@^&*! sick to death of having my guitar jump off it's strap. It's happened way too %$#@^ many times. Do it before anything else.

Re: Essential Guitar Upgrades

Straplocks of course. I like to have locking tuners on my guitars too, but I wouldn't call it essential. It's not something I'd always do, usually though.

Re: Essential Guitar Upgrades

essential : schaller straplocks
nice to have : sperzel locking tuners
if i dun like the stock sound but like the feel of the guitar : new pups
