Evan: SFX03 Question

I really like this pedal. But there is one design flaw:

Why does it come with a wall wart?

Especially in a time when most companies are intentionally designing AWAY from them, either by changing the direction of it, or by placing the "box" in the line with a standard plug?

I know, I'm nit-picking, but I'm just curious.

Now THAT was weird. I haven't actually played the new pedal yet. My experience was with a loaner.

I got mine out of the box today, and the cover on the AC adapter had come off. So, I called SD Customer Service, and they are sending a replacement.

SD IS DA BEST!!!!!!!!!!

I believe it's such a power hog that they had to put a wart in there. It's got real tubes in it. Can't really power a real tube on 9v.


Also,let me know if you hear any changes from teh one I loaned you from the one you bought.

yeah, putting the power transformer inside the chassis would raise size, weight, and thermal management issues .. in addition, it raises the cost of assembly, test, and inventory / supply chain management .. lastly, having it external makes it easier to sell in other non-US markets - all you do is include the correct wall wart ...

i hate wall warts too, but i know why they are used

But like like Les said, why not the inline wart. Those are so much easier to arrange at the plug end.

I do love mine, but the mid chord wart would have worked a touch better for me.

Well, I taped it and tried it last night. My initial "gut-response" is that the new one is darker sounding. I found it harder to eq than yours, but it has been a couple of months, so my memory might not be accurate.

BTW, I wrapped a blanket around Franklin, dimed the master, and wailed. I might continue to do that. It darkened up nicely that way. REALLY rounded out the tone:32:

first post,say hi to everybody.
sfx-03,use high volt, use a AC wall-wart then inside the pedal there is
a transfomer (same king of EH tube box) to turn the AC into high volt.

a lot DIYER can answer your question.
if you can read schematic,I think the methord is come from here

base on my knowledge,I think this is the clever and easy way to get high volt.and the high-volt is one of the important reason why it sound good.

Hey LesStrat; I'm shootin' from the hip here, but is it possible that what you heard is the difference between tubes that are "broken-in" and new ones? I'm assuming that Scott used his for awhile before sending it to you. This is just from what I've gleemed in this forum, but don't tubes have a break-in period. Just a thought.

Dude, get a weber beam blocker 12" and wrap the blanket around your sweetheart instead.

No, no, you misunderstand, oh Super Duper Tone Producer. I wrapped it to decrease the VOLUME! It was cranking, and it was cookin', and it sounded AWESOME!

Even wrapped, my sweetheart went to the back and closed the door.

This is all true. Plus, the wall warts are already safety-tested. If we had to do separate testing on every version in the world (and there are five!) we'd have to pass that cost on to our customers as well.

But, the inline wart would work the same as the wall version. It would just work better with power strips and racks.

yunno, i think i finally undersatnad what you meant by this question


stephen is not so much questioning the use of an external transformer .. rahter he is questioning the TYPE of transformer selected ... and i gather that he would prefer the sort where there is a length of power cord (i dunno, a few feet long or so) with a 2-prong AC plug to plug into the wall outlet before the transformer instead of the 2-prongs being built right into the transformer ... this way, the 'wart' woulnt have to fit against the wall or hog up space on the power strip

and there is no engineering or manufacturing reason not to do that that i can think of

Well, the inline ones are notorious for being inadvertently unplugged (Mains end, on the wart side) during gigs and other situations where someone may have to walk past /over the cables. I personally don´t trust any cable that can be unplugged in more than 2 places, it´s just an extra point for Murphy to attack

I think we're referring to the ones in which the transformer is hardwired inline.

Still one plug, just not a wart on the power strip. Kinda like the POD transformer.

Just to be clear, I'm not really complaining. I think the product is great. But this might be an area for improvement in the future.
