Ever get sick of acquiring gear and just want one great guitar?

Re: Ever get sick of acquiring gear and just want one great guitar?

Ever played a Parker Fly?

I played the Parker Fly Deluxe a while ago and it was very very lightweight and comfortable. Played great too and is definitely a very versatile guitar.

If I had a bad back I'd get something like that.

I used to mix a band with a lead guitar player who used a Fly. He always had great tone.

Erm....sure sometimes but then GAS kicks in

I like having a lot of guitars around though I do sometimes think it'd be nice to simplify and get down to just 2 killers

Re: Ever get sick of acquiring gear and just want one great guitar?

I limited myself at 4 electrics.. i would not be happy with just one, as i like to play each one for a week, than change and play another one. but 4 is more than enough for me. i didn't found one that would be perfect for me, but for now i am happy with LTD Horizon 1001 and Jackson DK2S, those are keepers, for how many years, i don't know.

Re: Ever get sick of acquiring gear and just want one great guitar?

But, couldn't you do covers without all those guitars?

I would say no.

I play both acoustic and electric. So that's a minimum of TWO. Say a Martin D-28 and a Strat.

But say you only play electric. Great. Now what do you do for a guitar if you have a gig, but your guitar is in the shop getting a set-up? Or fretwork? Or a pickup swap? If you don't have a backup, you lose the gig. And you're screwed. So you need a Number One-A. THREE.

If you do gig with both acoustic and electric...FOUR.

So you have four...two electrics...maybe a really great Custom Shop 1960 Strat Relic and a MIM Roadworn '60s Strat for backup. And you audition with a band, and they want you to play a Les Paul with humbuckers. Great band. Steady gigs, great money, good guys, good stylistic match. Hello, guitar number FIVE and backup number SIX. (See Lindsay Buckingham and Fleetwood Mac.)

Leader of the band says, I want to do a cover of The Byrds "Eight Miles High". Meet your new Rickenbacker 360-12, number SEVEN.

BAM! RECORD DEAL! TOUR! You now need 24 strings of Ric goodness! EIGHT.

Come home from your long tour for a backyard bbq with family and friends. OF COURSE there will be a sing-along around the fire pit! Oops...that heat will blister the top finish of your D-28...better run down to GC and grab a decent yet inexpensive Yammie, Tak or a Big Baby Taylor. NINE.

Good news! Your band just won a Grammy for your cover of "Eight Miles High". You get to meet Brad Paisley and become best buds. Learning that you don't own a Tele, he gifts you one of his. THANK YOU BRAD! Yep...TEN.

And then on tour again. Got a day off and wander into one of the high-end vintage dealers you've seen in Vintage Guitar Magazine. CANDYLAND! First thing you see is another Strat relic in the vintage blonde. Gotta have it. Ooh...check out this 1968 Les Paul Custom Black Beauty! And then the owner shows you this under-the-bed find 1957 Martin 000-18. It's just superb condition and just so sweet! The final tab comes to $15K and change, and you write the check. Hello, ELEVEN, TWELVE and THIRTEEN.

And so it goes...

-------

I like having multiple guitars, and I'm very blessed to have so many nice ones. I like gigging with multiple guitars. I like hearing my Legacy Strat on "Lay Down Sally" and my 335 on "The Thrill Is Gone". I dig the difference in tone and the difference in feel.

Again...for me one guitar is not enough.

Re: Ever get sick of acquiring gear and just want one great guitar?

I have not recently.. Not sure if I ever have. Seems like I may have played one many many years ago and didnt care for it visually. However, if I played one again and liked the way it felt and played, Id consider it. More practical now, less superficial.
However, I certainly cant afford one like Vernon Reids at what, $6k?? Thanks for the info, Ill keep it in mind!

Re: Ever get sick of acquiring gear and just want one great guitar?

One great guitar would certainly be nice if the option was between that and a lot of junk.

Better again would be one great amp.

One of the things about the last few years is the way the cottage industry has allowed the flourishing of small builders like Warmoth, Ceriatone etc which give options for fantastic top-end guitars and amps which can be bought cheaply - especially if you are prepared to do a little bit for yourself.
