Ever Modded a Fender Blues Jr.?

Re: Ever Modded a Fender Blues Jr.?

I got mine used with mod's included. It sucked. Maybe a clean new one works OK. I did everything to try to fix mine, but it hissed and popped and snarled at me no matter what I did. Later I fixed up a 1953 Fender Deluxe that I got for cheap and I've been in love with it ever since. The Celestion Alnico Blue I put in my Fender is magic. Bail on the Blues Jr and get a decent 15W tube. It's will be worth it in the end.

There's a ton of mods you can do - including a full-blown conversion to a Marshall 18 Watter. Check here for ideas:

Oh, and the easiest and best mod you can do is a better speaker. I don't know if you can shoe-horn just any 12 into them, but an external cab is a big improvement.

I picked up a Blues Jr. with a wonky reverb and a Reverend AllTone speaker about a year ago for short dough thinking it'd be a fun project. Boy, was I right.

I did most of the BillM mods listed above; reverb mod, tone-stack mod and the presence/bright switch mod. I also got new tubes from EuroTubes and Bob set me up with a great fresh set.

Immediately it made the difference between a decent amp and a great amp. I gig the Blues Jr. over a Deluxe Reverb Reissue with a'64 Jensen and NOS tubes, a Trace Elliot Vellocette (Gibson GA-15), and a Princeton Reverb II. The thing is an all-out tone monster with a decent amount of flexibility. I've even challenged myself to play an entire night without a single overdrive pedal and just a tuner pedal and walked out of the venue with a handfull of compliments on the tone.

I've got a second Blues Jr. on my bench now that I'm modding for my brother.

They're great sounding amps...it just takes about $10 worth of materials and an hour of your time to get them there.

Re: Ever Modded a Fender Blues Jr.?

A little over a year ago, i got my hands on the "limited edition" version of the Blues Jr. that comes from the factory with a laquered tweed finish and a Jensen speaker. I also had a regular black tolex Blues Jr. before this one and really the only difference i can tell is that the tone gets a little better when its overdriven.... other than that, i guess its all cosmetic. But all in all a good amp for practice and small gigs.
