Hi :reporter:
Does anyone here play or has ever played with an 'APPLAUSE' (by Ovation) guitar ?

What do you think about them in terms of:
sound quality, playability and reliability?

TX !!!

Re: ever played with an APPLAUSE guitar??

I got one of their 3/4 sized axes.

I put that thing through hell throughout my 4 years of high school and first two years of college. Its got its scratches and dings, but it's held up like a champ.

That is, except for the nut and tuners. Those broke a while back, but they were easy enough to replace.

The damn thing sounds like ass though. Not that I'm overly concerned with the way it sounded, its a travel axe, and as a travel axe it works great.

Re: ever played with an APPLAUSE guitar??

I have an Applause acoustic/electric shallow bowl......it's a little thin sounding unplugged but actually sounds pretty good plugged in.

I have it strung up in Nashville tuning right now for a fake 12 string sound....had it strung up as a nylon string before too.

It's a workhorse, no doubt.

Are there better guitars out there.....SURE.

Are there worse....ABSOLUTELY !!!

For the money, it's not bad at all. :bigok:

I forgot to add how I got this guitar:

I was driving around a few different neighborhoods when we were looking for a house & I saw a woman bringing things out to the curb. I saw a guitar & stopped to ask if they were having a yard sale.

She said it was her exes & she was planning on having a yard sale.....selling off all his stuff that he "didn't have the balls to come back for" .

She gave it to me for $20.00 :D

It's Ovation's lower-price line. I've played a couple, and while I own an Ovation CS-247, they're tolerable. I didn't find much of anything wrong with them, and they play well for their price range. They make good starter guitars.

I played one, and yeah it was okay. But i'm not into the whole roundback thing, they didn't like living in my lap. They slide off. And they are less than joyous when unplugged. But beyond that, the quality was like a epi is to a gibby....

Re: ever played with an APPLAUSE guitar??

I think the sound is rather thin. However, I thought the playability was awesome. I took mine, tweaked the truss rod, sanded down the bridge, and that bad boy has some low low action.

Probably one of the best bangs for bucks you can have for an acoustic.

I don't much care for the rounded back, it slips off my lap when I'm trying to play. It currently resides at my brother's house and he plays it daily.

Re: ever played with an APPLAUSE guitar??

I have one that's about 14 years old. I got it off my mom who didn't play it anymore. It's a Korean bowl type guitar. Pretty big, standard soundhole, no cutaway.

It sounds great. But the action was around 3 centimeters high. I filed the saddle down but the bridge is too high, so there is almost no back angle on the high e and b strings anymore, they sound a little dead. And because it's that special ovation bridge, there's nothing I can do short of having the guitar entirely unplayable.
It sounds really cool though.

Yeah, I think the whole roundback thing is preference. I play standing up for a reason: I "perform" that way. So I play standing up. I can agree also: a roundback isn't going to sound like a super-jumbo in terms of how loud, but Ovation's philosophy seems to be that of "plugged-in to perform, unplugged for hanging out with friends" thing.

But really, roundback is just a preference thing to me. I stand up mostly while playing. It's a guitar that fits well into the "lead singer plays guitar while singing" mentality.

By the way, anyone try any of Seymour Duncan's products for Ovation? I've yet to really find something that seems to be an upgrade for mine, although I wish I was rich enough to try some of them. Oh well....

Re: ever played with an APPLAUSE guitar??

I actually have the AE28. The low end of the Applause Acoustic/Electric line. It is actually a great guitar. Sure it doesn't have as much low end as a large body but it sounds good to me. Plugged is where it shines ... it has a passive pickup which sounds really good just not a lot of power. I added a Behringer Acoustic preamp pedal - I think the ACI21 (the Tech 21 knock off) - and it sounds even better now. It plays great. I was looking for an acoustic that played like an electric and this fit the bill perfectly.

hope that helps

Re: ever played with an APPLAUSE guitar??

I have a large back acoustic and the only thing I dont like about it is that it seems harder to play than my washburn acoustic, not sure if its just a bad fingerboard or what. I've never had a problem with it tho and it sounds really good.

Re: ever played with an APPLAUSE guitar??

Ahhh, my first electric was an applause. SSH w/Floyd copy.

It wasn't that bad for a starter guitar, but I'd look for something a bit better. The fret job was pretty lackluster and the parts were entry level-but that's the issue with an entry level guitar.

If cost is the issue, pack away another 100 for a while and add to it. Before too long, you'd be able to get a nice MIM fender or epi-heck check out Hamers import line-pretty nice for the price.

Re: ever played with an APPLAUSE guitar??

I had an ae model acoustic applause, and it was my first ever guitar, i liked it when i first brought it but then realised how weak and thin it sounded almost more plasticy than anything. I like the tone of wood alot more, and i definetly did not like the round back that kept sliding when i was trying to play it.

Same here - really like my 247. Broke a tuner on the applause. Main reason I upgraded was the killer quily burst on the 247. Action coulda been lower. It worked just fine.
