I do wish they'd put a control cavity cover on the back of 335/45/55's. The do on the Lucille but only because it has no f-holes, though I don't understand that either since I've never been able to fish parts out through the f-hole anyway, only through the bridge pu cavity.
All guitar makers make and have made -- with very few exceptions -- archtops and semi-hollows without control cavity covers. It's not just a Gibson thing. The idea is from trying to interrupt the wood as little as possible to get as much resonance as possible, which is why some guys prefer archtops with only a neck pu, and often a "floating" (attached to neck) pu at that.
