It seems to me that every PRS guitarist change the Dragons 2 to some kind of Seymour Duncan. Why is that so?

Because Seymours rock. Plain and simple.

I know of some on other forums that haven't. I even know of a few that have put PRS pickups in other guitars :laugh2:.

I can't see why. They wouldn't have both the guitar if it don't sounded good. And the pickups influence quite a bit.
1. So why does then everybody replace them?
2. And why does PRS still keep them as stock pickups?
3. Or maybe is just a myth, and that you always hear about the people that change them and not about all the people who actually keep them?

Myth. Just because we all (on this site) swap pickups doesn't mean the entire world does.

Just as many peeps here yank the pickups from their Gibson, Fender, etc.

A lot of people buy guitars based simply on their acoustic properties. They look for good, resonant pieces of wood and then replace pickups later if they don't fit their preferences. Pickups are very much about personal preference, some people love PRS pickups and some hate them. Same with pickups from Duncan, DiMarzio, Gibson, Fender, Bill Lawrence, etc.

Re: Every PRS guitarist change the pickups in their guitar. A myth or...?

I played the stock McCarty 'buckers that were in my Swamp Ash Special for close to a year before I swapped 'em out for Duncan's.

The neck pickup was too dark & smooth...GREAT for jazz but not for anything else I was doing & the bridge pickup sounded pretty good, but ultimatly they were lacking an "open" top end.

I was missing all the kool stuff, like hearing my fingers slide up & down string windings and variations in pick attack.

It felt & sounded like there was a pillow over the speakers when I switched to that plank...

Years ago one of my friends had a Custom 24 and he swapped the stock pickups for Duncans & eventually launched the guitar...one of my friends is still playing his '91 Custom and that's loaded with Joe Barden buckers...

No. I fact, I ordered my Cu24 with D2's. :p

Re: Every PRS guitarist change the pickups in their guitar. A myth or...?

I had 59s in my CU22. much preferred them to dragons.

I probably wouldn't swap out McCarty or McSoap pickups if I owned one of them.

Re: Every PRS guitarist change the pickups in their guitar. A myth or...?

I think PRS actually makes some of the best stock pickups. I agree with Hotgrits that Soaps and McCarty pickups sound fine.

There's been a few PRS pickups I didn't care for, like the HFS.

The problem is that you're asking about stock pickups on a pickup forum, so of course most people here change them at a whim.

I like C-5/59 in my PRS's, but I stay open to others as well.

+1

I myself, am only interested in how a guitar feels in my hands. That's it.
If it doesn't sound all that great, I know there's always options to change out certain pieces of hardware to change tonal charateristics.

For the record, I don't care much for PRS's stock pups. I've played a decent amount, and can't really dig em. At least not for what I have in mind. I think the ones that come to mind instantly were Dragon II's I believe. That came in the singlecuts. Unfortunaley, the neck shape, frets, and bridge layouts weren't completely to my liking either.

You're thinking of #7's--at least that's the stock pickup in the Singlecut. D2s come in the Custom 22.

Re: Every PRS guitarist change the pickups in their guitar. A myth or...?

The custom Seymour Duncans that were in both of my McSoaps are pretty darn good pickups, but I don't regret changing them out for Lollars, YMMV. I'm one of those guys that can hardly leave stock setups alone, I almost always change out pickups (in some cases it backfired, like how I learned that '57 Classics fit an SG Custom perfectly and even the best boutique pickups don't seem to work as well).

Re: Every PRS guitarist change the pickups in their guitar. A myth or...?

Some PRS pickups are just as good as SD ones. They are normally great, and if someone does change them it might just mean they want a differant sound. That being said not all of their pickups are acceptable.

1 Everyone doesn't replace them. 1/2 of mine are unchanged

2 Because they are good pickups. They are not the stock pickups all of their guitars

3 It is a myth

Why do people change the pups in LP's or strats?

Re: Every PRS guitarist change the pickups in their guitar. A myth or...?

I think it's a myth eventhough I'm not the right guy to talk this way because I changed the PUs on most of my PRSi.
But I always find lots of people who want to buy the PRS PUs I take off.

PRS PUs are good but I want the Duncan tone ! BTW I know many PRS owners that wouldn't change the PUs on their axes.

Re: Every PRS guitarist change the pickups in their guitar. A myth or...?

Suppose I change them SD's. Do I still keep the 5 switch system?
