Why do people change pickups in ANY guitar?

I´ll tell you why: Because they like the physical guitar but want something tonally different.

It´s IMO a Myth that everybody swaps out PRS pickups, the exact same has been said for Gibson, Fender, Anderson, Jackson, and any other manufacturer that makes /made their own pickups. The fact of the matter is that there are very many people that don´t change them out, because they´re satisfied with what they have. That´s one of the reasons there are so many used but stock instruments on eBay

Suppose I change them SD's. Do I still keep the 5 switch system?

If you do, you need to flip the magnet in one of the pickups.

I don't care for high output pups in my guitars, and that was the HFS, and it also had a nasal quality I wasn't fond of. All of that said it was still a decent pup.

No, and that's one reason a lot of PRS owners don't change them. It's trickier with a 5 way rotary switch because I think one of the magnets nees to be flipped to the rotary is hum cancelling in some positions. Somewhere on this site, there's info on how to install Duncans into a PRS w/rotary switch.

I don't have that problem with McCarty wiring though.

I think that MORE people change pups in Strats and LPs than PRS axes.

I also believe that many of the people who don't change them have never considered that maybe after market pups ARE available.

And many who do change them do so only because they like to change things up on occasion. I swap out pickups I like all the time.

I had a 96 CU22 so it came with Dragon I pups. Those were the one of THE BEST prs pups that I really liked. Next to them were the #7:smokin:

I think guitar makers should just have an 'optional' tab on pickups when ordering guitars. Might save us a buck or 2.
