Everybody!!!!!!!!!! A New Evh Pedal!

Re: Everybody!!!!!!!!!! A New Evh Pedal!

I saw some clips from those live 1981 videos for Fair Warning they show once in a while on the Canadian version of MTV.... Van Halen ruled the 80's.....

Re: Everybody!!!!!!!!!! A New Evh Pedal!

This thread fascinates me. It's really four threads in one:
  • One about the forthcoming MXR flanger reissue
  • One about companies capitalizing on so-called "has-beens"
  • One about how wasted EVH is all the time now
  • One about who invented/inspired/pioneered the tapping technique
There are probably a few sub-threads within there too. "Sammy sucks," "You're not my dad," "Icons that fart are funny."

This thread has talent. Look up, it can even do lists! (But it learned how to do that from Billy Gibbons.)

And I like this icon: :argue:

I'll say this...I own a real 70's MXR Flanger and it HAS the EVH flanger tone however I had the first dunlop reissue and it sucked rocks, the recently brought it back as improved and I didn't even bother to try it out...the EVH flanger CAN'T be as bad as the early Dunlop reissues!

I think you must of had a lemon. I've a/b'd an original MXR and a re-issue they sounded identical IMO...

Re: Everybody!!!!!!!!!! A New Evh Pedal!

what marketing! today i saw a dude at guitar center drop 300 bucks on the ec crossroads pedal and a hendrix wah. an evh flanger? cmon...van halen isnt even together anymore and everyone should know that the "pros" (clapton, halen, page, hendrix etc) used the off the shelf pedals 99% of the time. afterwards, the companies just make a "sig" model thats more expensive to make more money. cmon...these companies are getting annoying. i doubt evh uses/used that at all

im not knocking on van halen or anyone else but the companies are really just out to make money. sig pedals are fine for people who want them but to me, theyre not appealing.

He used the MXR Flanger, which MXR doesn't currently make. It's the same deal with the script logo Phase 90.

Re: Everybody!!!!!!!!!! A New Evh Pedal!

Not exactly. Those three artists used vintage gear that is either unobtainable or expensive or hard to get. Also those pedals get very close to the artists they're built for. Generally I have know problem with people trying to emulate their guitar hero as long as they have fun doing it.

When you are charging your fans $175 bucks a seat for the last concert, those fans deserve to have a sober guitar player or at least one that is not wasted. He played great that night. But, I also saw him in the DLR heydays (several nights in a row, from in the barricade) and he was a master then.

The ludicrous prices of concert tickets nowadays is systemic, so you can't really hold a single musician, or band, responsible (though I still admire Pearl Jam for speaking up about it, if nothing else).

What I find more crass is that someone told me that on the last tour, Eddie was taking guitars, playing them onstage for one song, and then selling these "touched by the master's hand" axes on ebay. I suppose if there's a market for it and people want them, more power to him, but it smacks of Salvador Dali's gift to his manager before he died: 10,000 signed sheets of paper, which were then printed and sold at high prices to misguided art collectors. I hope that, were I in his position, I'd not sully my own legend with this sort of thing. Cause he is, indeed, a legend.

It's been a rough decade for metal fans, all in all. I still can't get the image of Lars Ulrich sipping champagne in Some Kind of Monster while he auctions off his art collection out of my head, for instance... how much farther from the filthy streetkids on the back of Kill 'Em All can you get?

Re: Everybody!!!!!!!!!! A New Evh Pedal!

Fame and fortune change people, and all too often it's not for the better. It makes me wonder whether us so-called regular guys are happier than the rich and famous who are in and out of drug rehab centers, making and breaking marriage vows in less than six months' time and bickering over money matters from the warm confines of their multi-million-dollar estates.

Doing what EVH presumably has done with his guitars on eBay is a symptom of that change. The Pearl Jams of the world, sadly fewer and farther between, are much stronger. Yes, they could sell tickets for $100+ a pop but do and have done their best to keep that from happening.

In the world of professional sports it's just as bad if not worse because you don't have record labels and promoters taking as huge a chunk. At least a handful of those guys are jacked up on steroids and beat their wives because...well...I have no idea why.

Can these people really be happy? I've got my guess.

Re: Everybody!!!!!!!!!! A New Evh Pedal!

Ok, back to the pedal.
I have a perfectly fine Ibanez FL-9 from the 80s,
so I have no need for Mr. Van Halen's pedal.

If someone wants to buy one, by all means get it. But A/B it against the other flangers in the store first, and let that be the judge of which one you buy.

Re: Everybody!!!!!!!!!! A New Evh Pedal!

I've managed to stay out of this thread for 4 pages but I can't anymore.

First, it is known fact that Eddie uses the phase 90 and flanger. In the early days, those items (original MXR's) were not vintage. They were as new as the stuff we see today. Those pieces just happen to now be vintage collector's items.

Second: The new EVH Phase 90 was on his pedalboard on the last tour, I saw it with my own 2 eyes.

Finally: The guitars he played and had auctioned off (he didn't actually auction them himself), the money from those went to charities. He didn't set the price and made $0 off those.

I think it's a pretty cool looking pedal but I'm not going to run out and get one. Sometimes I miss the MXR original I had but am happy with the Boss BF-2B Bass flanger I use now (it's warmer than the guitar version). Yes, the price will be up there since it's striped and all. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

I stand both corrected and humbled. And reevaluating the person who initially told me about it. :>

Re: Everybody!!!!!!!!!! A New Evh Pedal!

I don't want to debate all the points that came up in this thread, but in
EVH's defense, let's not forget that in addition to being a talented and
historically important guitarist, he's a human being--and with a lot of low
points stacked up in a short time (divorce, cancer, hip replacement, death
of a parent, losing another singer and possibly being dropped from his
label, etc.)--that's a lot of $h!t to deal with, no matter who you are.

I'm sure i'll be checking it out when the local store gets one in..... chances are i may not buy one... but they maybe great... who knows.

Re: Everybody!!!!!!!!!! A New Evh Pedal!

well, it isn't something Id buy, and I have always liked EVHs tone and techniques, but never really studied them. I do know a few things...

-Steve Hackett was tapping on Genesis 'Foxtrot' in 71, and his stuff was pretty good, although his tone was way different than Eddie's...people who like tapping should check some early Genesis out- the approach is pretty cool, since he did a lot of harmonies with the keyboards this way.

-For years, EVH said in interviews that he 'never wants to cash in on himself'..statements like 'I could come out with striped guitars, and sell a million, but I don't want to- I want to inspire people, not have them copy me'...
Now with all this new EVH stuff- guitars, pedals, etc...it seems to go against what he said earlier in his career...when he really could have/should have cashed in on it, like most famous guitarists do now. Now, after a bad 15 year stretch, pending divorce, no new music in sight, it *seems* a little suspect. While I appreciate what EVH has done in the past, and I know how much VH's music brings us all back to the good ol days (his target market for these guitars/pedals/amps), EVH simply has not been relevant as a guitarist in the present sense for quite some time. His guitars and pedals are replicating classic tones of the past, but I'd be more interested in what he has instore for the future.

Re: Everybody!!!!!!!!!! A New Evh Pedal!

I agree with an earlier post: If there's a market for this product, why should folks come crashing down on Ed for it? If I were in his shoes I'd be crazy not to, especially given my "bad 15 year stretch."

You have the power as a consumer to say "I'm not buying this piece of junk" or "This is cool. I've gotta get myself one ASAP."

It's easy for us to sit back and jab at EVH or whoever else has had a dry spell and suddenly shows up on the scene seemingly looking for a buck.

I wished for years that Ed would of put out signature stuff back in the 80's.... if he had i would of bought ever bit of it! When i was in Highschool i bought a Kramer and everone else was too... i saw guys selling 70's Les Pauls for Kramer Focus models and stuff.... a few years down the road they were crying they didn't have their LP's anymore.. Kramer sold millions of guitars just because Ed used a custom made one... imagine what they would of sold if they sold stripped exact copies of Ed's 5150.... I know i would of been in the front of the line for those!!!!!

This Flanger has my interest up.... If it can do the the Flanger sound to Hear About It Later i may snag one... if it don't i most likely will not pick one up.

I'm sure it can. I have an original MXR Flanger and I can get that sound. I can even nail the bass intro tone to "You're No Good."
