I think they can but, this will get you nowhere near a single when they are split. They will be very weak and thin compared to a single when they are split.

I completely agree with Theodie on this one.
I do have a suggestion, though.
If you want good single coil tones and hot humbucker tones in a strat sized package, check out EMG's Dave Gilmour set.
Ignore what people say about them being sterile or toneless. They sound killer with plenty of mojo. Also, don't worry about battery life. I change my battery once a year just out of habit. I've never killed it since I started using EMG's.
