EVH 5150 III EL34 50w !!

Re: EVH 5150 III EL34 50w !!

That would complicate the circuit a good deal and probably make it harder to squeeze all that into the same chassis. You'd need space on the circuit board for a whole additional tone stack and then the additional switching circuitry to switch between them.

i don't think that would be a problem. Most amps are full of empty space anyway. Even TT has plenty of space for extra circuitry.

Extra space isn't always useless. You don't want components running at high voltages too close to each other or else they're going to start inducing current in their neighbors. Also, you need space for components to disperse heat.

I have had one for about a week. I am using it with an EVH 1X12 loaded with an Electrovoice EVM 12L speaker (though in this photo the cab still had the stock 30 watt celestion) and am very happy with the way this amp sounds. It is loud and clear. It did take some time to get used to the interaction between the bass controls and the resonance but now that I have its golden. They also bias them very cold so getting a proper bias on them really helps and opened mine right up.

Great amp, highly recommended

have you played the 6l6 one? If so, how do they differ?? are they night and day? or ??? thanks

They share the same basic DNA but the EL34 version is quite different. The El34 amp is tighter sounding and a little more aggressive.

I think the gain is a little lower on the blue channel.

Did you bias or have it biased hotter than the stock setting ? I know that Howard Kaplan, one of if not the main engineer(s) recommends 30 Mv per tube on the 6L6-Gc 50 watt head, and I have one and run it at his said setting, but if you do the formula to get the specs of the amp mine with the plate voltage could run at 42-44 Mv,but it doesn't sound as good..thinking about the EL-34 head too..just curious what you have done to/with the new El-34 head.

Re: EVH 5150 III EL34 50w !!

Hi sorry to going off topic but couldn't find any thread related to my query, So I am hoping that someone here could help me out.

I had just bought an EVH 5150 III 50 W amp from ebay and on turning it on at the first time, the fuse blew off.. I had the fuse replaced and powered on and it blew again. It was my mistake that I blindly trusted the seller and now I am struck with a faulty amp head. This is my first amp purchase and it turned out to be a bitter experience. Please, help me how to fix this issue.

FYI I live in a place where there are no amp repair shop for miles. So I have no other option that you seek you help and fix it my self.

As Lew guitar said..change power tubes and give it a try,if not may be the screen resistor(s) which means possibly tech if you haven't checked them out or opened up a tube amp,I am no expert but I got lucky and did the work myself, changed all 4 SGR's (screen grid resistors) on my Peavey Triple XXX as an upgrade and just to replace aging components, luckily my work came out fine...BUT YOU MUST BE CAREFUL POKING OR STICKING HANDS,FINGERS,ETC INSIDE OF THE TUBE AMP EVEN IF TURNED OFF AND UNPLUGGED,ONE WRONG MOVE CAN AND IN SOME CASES CAUSE YOU OR ANYBODY TO GET HURT REAL BAD,OR EVEN DEATH FROM EXTREMELY HIGH VOLTAGES!!! I did my own work because of like what you are saying,no tech within 200 miles from me and even then the company is always 3-5 months booked and backed up,so I watched lots of videos and did a lot of reading before I tried doing anything inside the XXX amp..sorry to ramble on and on....

Hmmm.... Makes it hard to choose.. I love the sound of the original one, but Im a HUGE fan of the early VH tone..
My chances of ever finding a place that has both to compare would be slim to none...
Thanks for the reply tho!!

Hello there,
I had just bought am EVH 5150 III 50W form USA and plugged in to my country's 220V PS, I know right ?? The most dumbest thing ever. Now after learning the most expensive lesson of my life, I got myself a step-down transformer with 500 W and replaced the fuse with 4A 250V slow blow fuse. Now the head won't turn on and there is nothing. Did I damaged the secondary fuse or worse, transformer. Please help me out guys.

ughhh............Not sure, I am no pro, but my other 2 amps have internal fuses as well. Please dont do it yourself, even if its unplugged there are still lethal voltages that could KILL you. Take it to a pro please Money is money, but there is only one you. 2 years you wont remember, be safe man

If you powered it up you might've fried the screens on all your tubes.

Asked a buddy of mine who builds his own amps. He says chances are you fried the transformer, and worst case scenario, you've fried the rest of the components as well. I'm far from an expert, but might want to take it to tech who knows what to look for.
