Re: EVH guitar with a high output X2N

I used to have an X2N. You can buy them in most stores. What is so all fire amazing about that?

IMO, the X2N is one of the best sounding pickups ever!

- It has rails which allows my bends to ring out like bells with harmonics galore without dropout - I LOVE rail pickups! Why SD doesn't have any balanced sounding production rails pickups I don't understand.

- It's got high output for a more liquid feel and more pick/string energy efficiency

- It's not wound too hot so that it isn't as compressed as a Super 3 or PATB-2.

- The tone is very balanced and harmonically rich with lots of sustain and just enough bite

- It looks amazing with the twin blades!

- You can buy them everywhere, they're readily available for you to shred them like they should be shredded. That's a positive thing IMO.

- It's Steve Blucher's first humbucker and it seems he got it right the first time around.

I'm still waiting for Seymour Duncan to produce a balanced sounding (i.e. not the shrill Dimebucker) high-output rails pickup designed for lead playing without dropouts when bending and harmonically enhanced sustain with lots of drooping overtones feedbacking in searing thickness when bending. Like a JB but with rails and much hotter!

What's wrong with the Hot Rails?

And apart from that, I don't buy the whole "dropouts" thing.
Never bothered any of the players I grew up with, and it doesn't bother me.

I should have been more specific, I'm talking 'bout humbuckers. The Hot Rails is excellent, and an humbucker version would be welcome!

About the dropouts, I can clearly "feel" the difference when playing an X2N and BLUSA XL-500 compared to a JB, Full Shred, Tone-Zone etc. The bends don't "feel" as strong and consistent when using polepieces.

I love rails too but I haven't tried any in HB size though. I believe Dimebucker is a SD production rail pup right?

Yes, but he clearly doesn't like them (which is fair enough, seems like lots of people don't).

Re: EVH guitar with a high output X2N

Fun clip. If there were an afterparty, I'm sure it would have been a good one.

I think the tone had a lot more to do with Dweezil's Peavey Wiggy amp, and his ability to cop Rhoad's feel.

Yeah, well, the key is I specified "balanced sounding" which the Dimebucker is not IMO. Indeed, the Dimebucker has its uses and I can see how some players might like it for their playing style, but it's simply not for me because I found it too shrill, even more shrill than my BLUSA XL-500 which is already much too shrill. I'm a dedicated lead player and I need a lot more thickness than what the XL-500 derivatives can provide. The harmonics are crazy though, I gotta give them that! Plus I like the blades.

I LOVE my BLUSA 500Xl, it's possibly my favourite pickup for the heavier kinds of metal - rythm and lead. Perfect for Pantera and death metal. :1:

Re: EVH guitar with a high output X2N

I am still EFFING WAITING to hear what is so EFFING fantastic about the paper mache / tissue covered strat with an X2N in it!!!!!!

Don't make me change my sig. Some of you know which one I'm talking about...

Re: EVH guitar with a high output X2N

The problem is... I don't think it's that special. Sure he sounds nice but I think you can get that tone without trying too hard.

Re: EVH guitar with a high output X2N

That evh loon should have put this thread in the guitar shop but this rasta guitar was given to DZ around 1983 I think. I remember they were interviewing a young DZ on MTV at the time and he pulled out the rasta guitar and said this was given to me by evh. I about cried in jealousy. It was the guitar used in VHs unchained vid in '81 with a different paint job or course. At least I think they are the same guitars from everything I've read

The "Rasta" was given to Dweezil by Eddie in the early/mid-nineties and it is indeed none other than the repainted "Unchained".

It's spray paint only.
And to an EVH fan, that guitar is an amazing piece of EVH guitar history. To anyone else it's just a piece of unsightly garbage (just like all of Ed's other homemade guitars!).

If you go on Dweezil Zappa's web site, he explains the guitar. He went to EVH's home studio and saw it in the corner, neck off with vomit in the neck pocket. Dweezil saw it, recognized it from a magazine cover, asked about it, EVH said he didn't like the way it sounded and asked Dweezil if he wanted it. Of course Dweezil said yes...

And it is the Unchained guitar just painted over

That's kinda depressing. ;)
What was it about Ed with the ruining paint jobs in those days? :D I know the R/B/W incarnation of Frankie has taken on a life of its own, but I prefer the original B/W scheme (and so does EVH, according to the interview he did for the $25K Fender replica - said he almost wishes he'd never painted it), and the Unchained paintjob is SO much cooler than the Rasta version, IMO...

The amazing thing is that even Dweezil did not know the full history behind that particular guitar body and where that particular neck (which has it's own incredible histrory) came from until late last month!
He was amazed when "evhguitars" (yes, that "evhguitars") and I disclosed the entire history with photographic proof to him on his website. The guitar obviuosly meant a lot to him before, but now I'm sure that he now has a completely new appreciation for it!

The "Franky" and the "Unchained" are really the only guitars he re-painted.

I know the R/B/W incarnation of Frankie has taken on a life of its own, but I prefer the original B/W scheme (and so does EVH, according to the interview he did for the $25K Fender replica - said he almost wishes he'd never painted it),
Ed re-painted the B/W Franky and changed the hardware out of a sense of frustration and anger when he discovered that Grover Jackson, Hondo and a few other guitar manufacturers were selling guitars with EVH style designs without his permission.

and the Unchained paintjob is SO much cooler than the Rasta version, IMO...
I have an appreciation for both designs. I find them both unique and interesting... which is why I built replicas of both!
