What do you think about think about those guitar models, Axis in paricular; and for what price do they go for usually?
I spotted this one in Finland: it only says that it's condition is excellent.

The price is 1500 € (roughly $2160)
I don't really have the money:banghead::chairshot:poed::dot:, so I doubt that I'd buy it, but maybe.

Re: EVH MM Axis and Peavey Wolfgangs

The Axis new are about $1600 and up American. Used you can find them for $1000 to $1200. Wolfgangs, it depends on which model, I found a Wolgang Special (USA) w/ hard case for $200 at a pawn shop, in store used they go from $600 (specials) to $1000 and up (standards),used. They do not make them anymore so used is all there is.

Re: EVH MM Axis and Peavey Wolfgangs

I did a review on mine a bit ago. Look it up.

It depends on what you are looking for.
They are excellent guitars. The build quality is top notch on EBMM's.
The Axis has an amazing neck that fits like a glove. It is fat but narrow. Kinda like a little club. For me playing below the 12th fret is the best on these necks. Higher up and i might prefer a regular C shape thinner strat.

Dont know if im gonna keep mine yet, but i am liking it more and more.

Tone is really subjective so i cant say if you will like it or not. Other love the tone.

Re: EVH MM Axis and Peavey Wolfgangs

I've read your posts (well the at least the reviews).
But, did you say it's more balanced than LP, with less mids?
Oh, and that fat but narrow sounds just right for me, LP's are quite fat, and not too wide.

Re: EVH MM Axis and Peavey Wolfgangs

But what about the basswood? I suppose it has less mids, sustain, and _momentum_ in the sound compared to mahogany. I also think that I might do myself a mahogany bodied version with maple top, and I'd propably get TOM bridge. I actually noticed now that I don't need or want the floyd in it, because my DIY Strat will have Wilkinson, graphite nut, and locking tuners, and I'm not really into crazy Vai-like bendig stuff.
So, what do you guys think about this:
Mahogany body, maple top, maple neck, maple or ebony board, Tune-o-matic brodge?

Re: EVH MM Axis and Peavey Wolfgangs

you will not get what you want making it on your own. It is not the same. The problem is that you dont know what the end result will be. IMHO

i think it is better to try a bunch of different guitars and see what you like more.
there are a bunch of mahogany/maple top hartail tom bridge super strat guitars out there now. Shecter makes em so does ibanez and a bunch of others.

Re: EVH MM Axis and Peavey Wolfgangs

The Axis' are killer! One of the local GC's sells used one for $500-600 and new $1200- $1400. I've never had the cash when they are available though.

Wolfgangs with the flat tops are sweet. you can get a used one for $600 or less.

depending on the basswood it can have some serious warmth to it... i have a few different guitars made out of Basswood and one of them is seriously thick!!!! and Ernie Ball is a company known to use high quality woods... most people know basswood from Ibanez guitars and i've never liked Ibanez's that much... i'm not sure if the Basswood they use is different then most companies but i do love Basswood in general

The EB guitars have a thin maple top on them so that adds some brightness back... Axis's can be amazing....

Re: EVH MM Axis and Peavey Wolfgangs

I actually really like the Peavey Wolfgang models. The only Peavey guitars I do like. The necks feel great, they play wonderfully and balance extremely comfortably. Sound good too.

The top actually isn't that thin- it's about 1/8"- I can see it in the pickup cavity in my naturally finished Axis. It's thick enough to add some substantial brightness to the basswood, just to balance it out. It's not the "bent top" or "drop top" some companies use.

Re: EVH MM Axis and Peavey Wolfgangs

I have both, and they get about equal playing time. I have a black Wolfgang Special and an orange Axis.

Re: EVH MM Axis and Peavey Wolfgangs

yeah for some reason my axis is just sounding better and better by the day. Seriously. the guy that had it before me didnt play it at all, and it is sounding better day by day as i play it.
Of course my ears are used to it more now as well. But the more i play it , i can swear it is getting more harmonically rich.

What is the difference between the Wolfgang and the Axis that you see?
From what i heard myself the Axis is tighter with more punch.

Well, that is only good thing that the guitar's sound changes slowly, because it usually haves a GREAT tone finally, when the wood has evolved totally or sth like that, the wood lives all the time and playing it (or the resonation) affects it.

E: You know Paganini? His Cannon-named violin was/is quite a fierce instrument: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Il_Cannone_Guarnerius

Well, of course you can't know what the instrument will sound like before you have built it and played it for some years, I do know that. But, I can get approximately the kind of sound I want by choosing the correct pieces of wood, and the right hardware (and building it carefully, you son't want the neck to fit the pocket too loosely, do you?).
And yeah, there are loads of those super strats. But what if I want something that is more like "Super Les Paul" (and I know that the Axis or 'Gang is 25.5", basswood body, maple neck, etc, so not quite LP).

Re: EVH MM Axis and Peavey Wolfgangs

I have an older Pre-Pat Wolf and the only thing I didn't like about it was the pick ups. I've changed the bridge to an S.D Custom which works great in this guitar 'coz it doesn't sound THAT hot... just warmer and smoother. I need to change the neck pick up, just unsure as to what to drop in yet. It's also coil tapped now which makes it really versatile! Here he is...

I like the neck better on my Axis. The only thing I wish the Axis had was a removable bar, when I do trem work I like to let go and have it fly back. Plus, the volume knob is a little to close to the pickups IMO.

I actually like the stock pickups on my Wolfgang Special better than the Axis. That is just my ears, and I haven't done any swapping on them yet. They seem to be a little hotter than the pickups on my Axis.

And I'll try to get some pics.
