EVH Phase 90 Owners

Is this pedal humbucker friendly, i.e. it does not distort with high output humbucker?

This pedal does not have true bypass, I presume; do you notice the slightest tone sucking?

Thanks!

Re: EVH Phase 90 Owners

my EVH phase 90 was fun....while it worked! it took a crap on me about 4 months into owning it and since i had lost the paperwork foolishly i couldn't get it fixed and now i'm left with a biter taste for that thing.

if you want MXR i'd pass on the EVH and go with the custom shop MXR Script phase 90 (don't but direct, they are only $100 if you shop around)

OR

what i went with to replace my EVH, the BYOC phase 90 which IS true bypass and the circuit is a copy of the original MXR with the option for it to be the block letter or script version when you build it...

or you can buy a fully built version with NOS parts if you don't want to build it yourself (check the axeandyoushallreceive site in the above link)

Re: EVH Phase 90 Owners

I have been using an old Boss Phaser for ages... I hardly plug a phaser in anymore... i use to when i was a big EVH teen fan..... I should look into the custom Shop Phase 90, or that BYOC parts pedal oneday

Re: EVH Phase 90 Owners

There is a more recent "script" Phase 90 RI, but I haven't heard it yet.

I use it with my hot Wolfgang pups and it does not does not distort. I keep mine hooked in to the front end of the amp and don't notice any tone changes on or off, or pulled out of the chain. I think if you pick up a good condition used regular Phase 90 and clip the wire to resistor R28 you'd be happy. But it won't look as cool!

Re: EVH Phase 90 Owners

I found my phase 90 (as well as my phase 45 and phase 100) to be bucker friendly but I will say for sure that the Dunlop pedals are nothing like a real MXR pedal...I have not tried the EVH or the new Custom Shop version but I wouldn't waste my money...save up your cash and get a real MXR Phase 90, you'll be far happier in the long run plus you can sell it later if you want/need to and not loose a dime!

Re: EVH Phase 90 Owners

I just came back from Guitar Center. I did an A/B comparison between the Phase 90 and EVH Phase 90. I think that the Phase 90 sounds better, because it is thicker in effect. The EVH Phase 90, regardless whether it is script or modern, is too subtle for me. And I don't think it's worth the price.

I can do soldering, but I think that I'll just buy an MXR to save the hassle.

What does the R28 mod do the Phase 90 again?

Thanks for the replies fellas.

The mod seemed to smooth it out (I modded a regular Phase 90 a couple of years ago). I think it reduces the gain in the stock pedal and makes the effect more subtle.

It's interesting you mentioned the EVH was too subtle. I was just messing with it and I thought it sounded pretty cool around the 12:00 position. I usually run mine at about 8 or 9:00. I personally like a more subtle effect. But yeah, if it's too subtle for you the regular Phase 90 without the mod might be what you like.

Re: EVH Phase 90 Owners

I think that I would really want to do the R28 mod if I did get the Phase 90. Would such mod be necessary if I got the Phase 100?

Re: EVH Phase 90 Owners

I have a Dunlop made MXR Phase 90 that my wife got for me while we were dating. The thing sucks tone like mad in bypass mode. I'm still modding it. Did R28 mod, C11 and C12. I really want to make it true bypass with it sucking tone so bad, just haven't gotten around to it. It can be done but it requires removing some of the PCB where the switch is soldered to. If it didn't suck tone so bad, I'd leave it as-is and probably use it but the difference with it in the chain and out of the chain is quite apparent.

I wouldn't waste money on the EVH model. You're paying for the initials on it and the stripes. Not worth it, IMO.
