:fingersx: Have an EVH and was wondering if anyone knew much about the specs of these pups. What magnet... Alnico .....? Frequency response.... etc.,just trying to get all the info I can.
Thanks...

Re: EVH pickup

Dont waste your money, get a Custom Custom that and the EVH almost sound the same! If you have played the CC you know what the EVH sounds like pretty much. The EVH just has a bit less output!

Re: EVH pickup

I agree. The CC is almost dead on EVH.
I was not meaning dead on EVH pickup. I was meaning eddies tone on records.
I should see how things look before I post

Re: EVH pickup

hmmmmmm that's a shame
the CC is a tad too thick for me at times
I figured the EVH was like an overwound and thicker APH1, with similar open tone, just less highs and more beef.
NOW THAT is something I would want!

HMMMMMM so how does the SLASH model APH1 from the Custom Shop sound? overwound in the bridge?

Re: EVH pickup

I don't know what you guys are smokin'. The EVH (now called the '78 model) doesn't sound like the CC to my ears. I've been playing the CC for years and have also played the '78 Model and they are quite different. Not to mention it's got approx. 9k DC resistance (42 gauge wire) where as the CC is 14.4k (43 gauge wire).

Re: EVH pickup

ErikH, I agree. They sound nothing alike. Mayby a bit similar but for me the EVH sings a little more.

Re: EVH pickup

ErikH is correct... the EVH is basically an overwound PAF design... the Custom Custom in more compressed sounding because of the thinner gauge wire used.
The thinner wire reacts differently... mostly in regards to dynamics and harmonics.
Both are EXCELLENT pickups...

I totally agree....the ´78 doesn´t have anything near the midrange of a cc, ans sounds a lot less compressed as well.... has a much airier and more open tone IMO

Re: EVH pickup

Thinner wire doesn't react differently. It's still copper. Part of the difference you're hearing is the fact that the CC is about 5k hotter because you can get a lot more #43 on a coil than #42, which cranks up the output and hits the front end of the amp or stompbox harder, which in turn creates a more compressed tone. But this 'compression' is partly the result of the number of turns and has nothing to do with the fact that the wire is thinner.

I don't know if the CC is potted, but if it is, my weekend potting experiments lead me to believe that potting would account for the rest of any compressed tone -- would soften the highs a bit too.

Re: EVH pickup

Yes, the CC is wax potted. I think the '78 Model is as well. Not 100% sure on that though.

I would probably say that the '78 is more like a de-snarled PG. Still an overwound A2 PAF but with a different character to it than the PG, and a tad hotter, but not much.

bingo!! i have a CC in one super strat and an EVH in another and to be honest the EVH/'78 blows away the CC in overall tone. a lot more warmth, less of a big mid push and just well rounded.

the CC is cool too for it's own style but they are far from the same. yeah you can get EVH tones with a CC no problem...but get your own tone :D i play metal, punk and rock with my EVH/'78 and it works damn well for it actually!

Re: EVH pickup

I just got two EVH or more properly: 78 humbuckers...one trembucker and one zebra regular spaced. I think MJ wrote 9K on the box for both. Lew

Re: EVH pickup

My question is are they really worth the price? I'm suprised that they aren't a production series model since there has been a lot of interest.

Every pickup I have tried that came from the Duncan Custom Shop and that was wound by MJ was worth the price. There's a complexity and extra vibe to the tone of evey MJ wound pickup I own.

Re: EVH pickup

Everyone I've talked with who has one has said, yes, they are worth it. We can look at it this way, what's your tone worth?

Not saying that the production models are bad because they are not, far from it. Custom Shop pickups just have something about them, other than the MJ magic. ;)

Re: EVH pickup

Lew, could you describe a little bit the differences between the neck and bridge 78' models? What are the D.C. resistances ect.?
