so much for the 'lone marshall' of myth and lore...

and yes..that is a mullett..heheh...he doesn't have the molestor mustache though, so it's all good

He retired his famous marshall head to the studio in the very early 80s after an airline lost and regained it in transit.

Most of those marshalls are backups, as he ran them pretty hard.

Re: EVH Rig Pics

Some of those Marshalls are Master Volumes right?

I was surprised to see eq pedal. I remember reading Eddie saying he was not much of an eq guy

Re: EVH Rig Pics

As a kid, I used to gawk at those pictures in school, since I always had a rock magazine inside the schoolbook I was pretending to read in class.
Then, I'd go home and wear out my cassettes, trying to cop his licks.
Definitely, the good ole days.

The thing that I always found funny was that he really only needed about 3 guitar tones, and he had this tremendous mountain of gear....enough to fill 3 semi's.
I used to sit in class and draw diagrams of my dream rig, which was something that resembled these pictures here.

Too bad a lot of younger players only got to see Ed as a fading 80's memory, because back then, he was a Guitar god of mythical proportion....everything about him was larger than life, as exemplified by these pictures of his touring rig.

HOLY CRAP! Now you know why the 'Brown Sound' is so revered. You don't know Ed's tone till you hear this sh!t fired up!

I used to do that exact same thing, and still do to some extent!

Sometimes I honestly think i was born about 15 years too late. There's so many of my favorite artists that are now broken up, not touring, or dead. :(

Re: EVH Rig Pics

A couple of years ago Eddie was on the Howard Stern radio show. He was playing guitar in the studio. Howard asked Eddie to play and then started saying he sucked. Eddie was horrible. Of course he was playing through a small unknown amp at the time, but everyone in the studio was laughing at him and he couldn't continue. :smack:

Re: EVH Rig Pics

lol some of those pictures look like they were taken with a spy camera! ive heard ed was secretive about his gear, but did they really have to go to such lengths to find out his gear? :D

I would have loved to have seen that episode. I have a hard time believing that Ed could pick up a guitar and suck. They must have filmed it at 5 in the morning or something, which isn't exactly prime hours for someone like Ed.

Re: EVH Rig Pics

I just want to say this to piss everyone off. I saw Van Halen on the W.A.C.F, Fair Warning, Diver Down. and 1984 tours. I was always on the front row right in front of Eddie. it always took me 2-3 days before my ears would quit ringing. Those were truly great times. I remember we used to leave to go to the shows at 3 in the afternoon and the doors didn't open until 7. We got there super early everytime just so we could be on the front row. General Admission seating ruled!!

Re: EVH Rig Pics

Ed has let out so many different stories to so many people. That there are now alot of conflicting sources of information on Ed's true rig.

I think all of its a load of ****, and we'll never know how to get the brown sound.

Re: EVH Rig Pics

Get a Marshall(preferly one Plexi) get a guitar, practise like a madman and play your ass off!
That would be the ticket, Eddie plays with alot of attack, he plays the thing, he does not
use that dull lighttouch as some does...read even undynamic boring sound.

Re: EVH Rig Pics

^^^^ Agreed

I've read that Ed used to sit in the hotel room between gigs and play his electric without an amp watching TV with the sound turned off.

Interesting pics of this rigs. Shows a nice comparison on his new sound versus his old.

Look at the mids on his EQ pedal!!!!!, then check out the mids dial on his 5150 head. There are obviously a **** load of processor's between his 5150 and guitar, but if that's a pic of Ed's rig post Balance, it explains alot. Too much gain (looks like it's past 6) and high output pup's = crap, shrill tone. There's always an exception, especially for dropped tuning power chords (ala Machine Head, Killswitch Engaged) and Steve Morse and his 5150's had a cool tone on the Deep Purple live DVD.

Lol, I might be the odd one out here but I like VH's tone all the way through their career (yes, I even enjoy the F.U.C.K. and Balance live and recorded tone). The Cherone album is nothing more than a mess. I've talked about it in depth on previous posts and frankly, I don't think of it as a VH record.

Re: EVH Rig Pics

I posted this somewhere before but noone replied to it - how the hell does he get those deep harmonics on his 5150? I don't think any amount of processors could achieve that.... any ideas anyone?

Re: EVH Rig Pics

Like said before...he plays that way...he would sound like that through a peavey solidstate and still sound like Eddie, you attack the strings bigtime.
There is no tricks to that, play it until you get it...there is no magic trick.

They did but few will admit to it these days. I had one in the late 80's!!!!! There, I am not too proud to admit it!!

I had a mullet around christmas of the end of 2000! And it was a bigger more bogan one than eddies in that pic...it was awesome!

(only kept it for about two weeks though ;) )
