EVH sound any advice?

I am currently using 57' stratocaster reissue maple neck which i replaced the the bridge pickup with a JB humbucker, (sounds great) but i am not getting that evh sound i am kind of looking for. Tapping doesn't work out that good, harmonics are ok. I want the EVH sound would it be wise to put in the Frankenstein Humbucker Pickup, or something else that can do the job. I am using a egnater rebel 20 amp

Re: EVH sound any advice?

what era are you looking for? VH1-W&C first is gonna be the seymour duncan custom shop '78 humbucker, Fair Warning-1984 is gonna be either the seymour duncan custom custom or the Fender/EVH pickup.

unless you have a plexi cranked to blow.......it's not gonna make much of i difference. Oh and unless you have EVH's DNA, you'll never sound 100% like him. Its all in his fingers.

Hey man welcome to the forum!

The first thing about the JB is its sensitivity. Pup height, polepiece height, and string type. This pup is a monster but it takes some monkeying to get it JUST right

All that said, it's not a VH type of sound.

I've got the 78 in a CU24 and R8 and can get fairly close. If you want to stay outta the Custom Shop any A2 based PAF is going to get you close....for the older tones.

For the newer stuff it's like Christopher said Custom Custom.

no it shouldnt be a problem. I mean some people say that a floyd will thin out the sound a bit, but i dont think it will kill you if you dont have one. If you dont have a locking nut, you just wont be able to stay 100% in tune all the time after doing a dive bomb.....but some EVH style tricks can be done only with a floyd. You should be good without it though.

Re: EVH sound any advice?

75% of those harmonics/tapping/etc are in a monster overdriven power sagged Marshall. Nothing to do with the pups. A 2x4 plugged into that amp through the phaser/flanger/delay/rverb would have sounded cool.

15% is Ed's hands/tude/heart/technique/style - and yes I'm talking about the tone.

The remaining 10% is the pup
any 59 for early
CC for later

And welcome! Tell us about the rest of the rig. But remember - ed may have played anything and did play strates without floyds and LP's, Explorers etc...The guitar doesn't even matter that much. Floyd is totally optional.

Re: EVH sound any advice?

that egnater set to the 6v6 tubes should get you a halfway decent brown setting if you eq a ton of mids, half bass/treble, about 3/4 presence(if you have one). as far as a floyd, you don't need one! eddy actually recorded with a vintage style trem, he prefered it's warmth to the floyd, but used the floyd live as tuning stability was more important in that situation. and now for the pickup.... van halen mostly used a2 type pickups, and depending on how close you want to get to how much money you want to spend, you could either spring for an a2 magnet for your jb(cheapest) a CC or an a2 PAF(middleground) or a '78($160) personally i'd just go for an a2 for the JB. i use one and get half way decent VH style tone, albeit a bit fatter/chunkier.

Re: EVH sound any advice?

thanks guy, you all seem to have great knowledge of pickups tones, guitars, amps etc...

Re: EVH sound any advice?

well, i only play for fun at home, for friends.. i have egnater rebel 20, 57' reissue strat with a full JB humbucker that i had installed in the bridge. i do have metal zone boss pedal and ds-2 boss pedal, and blues driver pedal, but i don't use any of the pedals.... oh the amp does not have reverb, i would need pedal for that.

Re: EVH sound any advice?

^oh yea, almost forgot! a critical part of the VH sound also comes from some reverb 'n' delay;) btw stacking those blues driver and ds-2 could get you into VH territory if you set them both for high level/low drive.

Re: EVH sound any advice?

Hi I will sell a SD EVH 78 - 9.0K braided connector, 20 cm length .
I will ship to USA - for complete 85 USD shipped // 60 Euro // 55 GBP
if this helps. on interesst mail clausheeg@gmx.de

Re: EVH sound any advice?

Ace is 100% right, except maybe a few more % to Ed's hands and aggressive technique.

Re: EVH sound any advice?

I manage the tone with a strat equiped with a mini pearly gates at the bridge, or a fat strat with a pearly gates plus. Bassman head at 6 and a DS1 will get you VH1

I agreee and I personally prefer the Pearly Gates Bridge model for early EVH tones and the CC for Fair Warning/1984 era tones. For the Ernie Ball Era forward a Tone Zone is a good choice.

+1 on the TZ......did the EBMMEVH dimarzio signature bridge become the TZ after edward went to Peavey?

If you really want to know don't listen to anybody saying that a pup is going to get you there alone. Go over to the metroamp website and look for EVH 78' rig...the guys spec's everything out for you.

I just got my PQ4 Parametric EQ.....it can just about change any pup to do what you want it to do.

Have to pretty much agree with everything you said. I have a 598 in the bridge and a CC in the other guitar...will get me any sound.

Re: EVH sound any advice?

actually rereading this thread it occurs to me Ed's original stage guitar basically WAS a strat like yours, with just a PAF humbucker in it. into a marshall plexi with the input voltage lowered to about 90v (from 120)

so the guitar bit is pretty simple (now) and basic. the amp is trickier if you have neighbors, ed moves a lot of air. by modern standards its louder than it is dirty, some echo helps.

the rest is in the fingers. i notice when i really try and use the tips of my fingers to fret notes, it sounds better. also ed doesnt sling his guitar low, its up high for a rocker.

that should get you close enough, oh and don't forget the take no prisoners attitude!
