EVH Wolfgang Special HT

I was at my local guitar store and had the opportunity to play a used EVH special Hard Tail. It was a used guitar and they were wanting $600. I was really to surprised to see a EVH hard tail I had thought that all his signature models had a Floyd installed. I was blown away by the sound performance of the guitar although the neck and frets probably would take a little getting used to. I went back to the store a few days later and the guitar was gone and there isn't anywhere in town that carries the EVH new or used. I heard that the EVH Specials were no longer being made in Japan and are now made in China. Is this true? Anyone own or have any experience with the EVH special HT or FR models? If so what are your opinions? I am interested in possibly buying this guitar depending on price and if I can find one that plays as well as the one I jammed on. I am hesitant ordering online from a major retailer because of some experiences I have had in the past dealing with them. Any suggestions on a company to go with when purchasing (deal wise)? Anyone know the average price for an EVH special?

Re: EVH Wolfgang Special HT

I just traded my EVH Wolfgang Japan in and my Blues Deluxe for the new Fender 68 modified silver face amp. I really liked the single note playing, nice clear tone but the guitar sounded flat/dead when playing loud next to my Gibsons. I took a chance again on a Floyd rose guitar! the hard tail should be much better. Loved the frets and the neck though. Basswood and a floyd dont work that floyd was made out of a alloy in stead of steel like the German ones.

Re: EVH Wolfgang Special HT

I purchased an EVH Special HT MIC about a month ago. It was a great guitar, but i couldn't get over the made in China part of it. After playing it for two weeks I ended up trading it in for a USA HT Stealth, which is the best guitar I have ever played (and I got it new for a great price). As far as the special, definitely go for the Japanese one. They do sound better, and their re-sell value will hold more than the chinese ones. $600 for used is not a bad price. I've seen some used listed for around $1000 and some for under the price you have. Look on Ebay and the used section of guitar center to get a better spectrum of prices. Most new ones you'll get are made in China, but there are a few retailers who still have MIJ in stock. Just be sure to check before purchasing. The EVH guitars are awesome, and you'll enjoy one for a long time.

I saw them go from $1499 down to $999, then on clearance for $599- all at Guitar Center, though the $599 were floor models that were dented and scratched.

According to the Floyd Rose web site, both are made of hardened steel- except the EVH is made in Korea while the OFR is made in Germany.

A weakness with the Korean Floyds is the trem arm assembly though- it has looser tolerances compared to the German Floyd. If you get a German Floyd trem arm assembly as a replacement the trem is as good as a German unit

Re: EVH Wolfgang Special HT

I had the one made in Korea, think im done with those. HT sound better unless you change the block
