EVH Wolfgang Special or Washburn N24?

Liquid State

Hey guys,

I'm very interested in these two guitars: the EVH Wolfgang Special and the Washburn N24 (Not N2 because it doesn't have the Stephens Extended Cutaway).
Which of these guitars is better or higher quality?

For reference the music I mostly play is Extreme, Van Halen and Muse.

Also, is Ebony (as on the Wolfgang Stealth) inferior in any way to AA Birdseye Maple as a fretboard material?

Thanks.

The EVH Wolfgang Special gets my vote, only because i have a soft spot for the Wolfgang series of guitars.

I think i am one of the very few on this forum that actually likes 'em !

I love my Peavey Wolfgang. That's the way I'd go.

Ebony is hard and smooth and they don't cover it with awful crap. My preferred fretboard material by far. The Stephens Cutaways are pretty nice guitars even if they are Washburns. Here is a link to someone that knows alot about them. http://www.vintagewashburn.com/Electrics/ECelectric.html I would say the touch , feel and hear test is best way to figure that one out.

Re: EVH Wolfgang Special or Washburn N24?

Cheers for the replies.

I played the Wolfgang special in a shop and was very impressed, the neck feels great! The only downside for me (and this could turn out to be a minor issue) is the size of the vintage frets compared the to the jumbo and medium-jumbo that I am used to. It would just be a case of getting used to them.

Sadly I can't play the Washburn in any shops because I live in the UK but because the special is almost exactly the same to its USA made counterpart (you know without he carved top and 5 ply binding) it will be better quality than the agathis bodied N24 (or N2)

I've always heard great things about the Peavy Wolfangs. I really like to play the guitars first though (obviously) which begs the question why I even considered the Washburn haha, maybe the Nuno fanboy erupted from inside of me...

Oh and thanks for the info on ebony, I've only had experience with rosewood and maple.

Haha wow just read that thread, some strong dislike for that guitar! Especially the aesthetics. I actually really like the body shape (although my fav body shape is a Mattocaster) And about that MIC, on Guitarguitar atm they are being advertised as MIJ but I am doubtful of that. Anyway it was still great when I played it!

And I know man haha can't decide if I like the black or stealth best!

What do they go for up there in Scotland these days ?

Re: EVH Wolfgang Special or Washburn N24?

BUGGER :(

I think i prefer the Matt version, but i gets fingermarks a LOT quicker than the glossy black.

Haha I know! Urgh and I have a soft spot for matte black, I have this Epiphone Special II GT in matte and it's not actually too bad for fingermarks believe it or not. Much better than my mirrored pick guard on my Strat ;)

Here's something that I've been told many times but was wondering if its true with the wolfgangs. In sunburst versions of guitars they have to have a good quality piece of body wood (or top) and in coloured variations they can cover up a lower quality piece of wood. Since the pickups are directly mounted the quality of the wood matters a bit more right?

There are MIJ Wolfgang Specials out there but they tend to be older and rarer. When the factory that made those(and a bunch of midrange Jackson models, and the Charvel Pro-Mods) closed down they moved the production elsewhere, and the Wolfgang Specials are now made in China. So its entirely possible for them to have MIJ Wolfgangs.

If you're looking for value the Wolfgang is more generously spec'd to me. Its got the really practical wheel-adjust truss rod, the hardcase, stainless steel frets, and the D-tuna.

Thanks for the info Hairmail.

Ditto. There aren't a lot of them in stock so like you said, it is possible they are MIJ, they wouldn't mislead the consumer on something like that anyway, I'm pretty sure the Sale Of Goods Act would prevent that.

As for value for money, I completely agree. The fact that they are basically the same to the (let's say somewhat overpriced) USA made ones (as mentioned before USA labour cost, carved top and 5 ply bindings).
Well I better raise the funds quickly and snap one of 'em up ;)

And awesome Wolfie Christopher ;)

Re: EVH Wolfgang Special or Washburn N24?

I wonder why they didn't move production to Mexico.....the stripped series is made there and not to mention the entire line of MIM fender guitars

Re: EVH Wolfgang Special or Washburn N24?

Neat! I wonder why this info isn't any more widespread.

It looks like the wolfgang standards are going to be far-eastern made and the specials are now going to be MIM, I hope they still come with hardcases though.

*edit* There's one more post with alot of info on that thread:

http://www.vhlinks.com/vbforums/showpost.php?p=1710535&postcount=66

Lots of new stuff coming up it seems, the standard range is going to be made in Indonesia, and the specials are being upgraded to having arch-tops.

Wait a second, is that double cream I see on the unchained guitar?
