EVH Wolfgang vs Charvel

Re: EVH Wolfgang vs Charvel

The Japanese wolf's are a league ahead of the Mexican ones. Nothing against the Mexican models, they're fine, but the Japanese are much higher quality
Actually, towards the end, the MIJ ones kinda got wonky. They moved production to China and those were actually fairly indistinguishable from the good MIJ ones (besides the occasional dud).

I haven't gotten my hands on an MIM Wolfie, but the spec is a bit different. They've got bigger frets and a carved top. You can order them online with ease but I haven't seen one in a store, yet. Everybody I've read about getting one, though, has been uber happy.

Re: EVH Wolfgang vs Charvel

I didn't know that about the Chinese ones, good info to know!
I actually much preferred the flat top for some reason, it felt better to me, but to each their own I guess.

I have a flat top non-flame Peavey that I love. I wish EVH would do a version like that made in Mexico. Place it between the current Special and the Standard and price it around $750. I'd be all over that.

Re: EVH Wolfgang vs Charvel

I wish they made some flame models too. I really liked the tobacco burst color, but it was hard to come by (when I was looking) and the current production line doesn't have anything like it I don't think.

Re: EVH Wolfgang vs Charvel

Well thanks for making me look silly haha. I do love that look, and they felt and played great!

Yeah, the new EVH necks are different than the older Peavey necks. The EVH is a standard symmetrical shape. It still feels pretty good, especially with the bigger frets. I like the bigger frets on the Standard and they're the same on the new Special.

Re: EVH Wolfgang vs Charvel

I really loved the stainless steel frets they had/have, I've never played a neck with those before and they were fantastic. Only thing I would change is maybe the pups, but that's just because my tone and sound is a bit different than EVH, but the pickups were great for being stock. I think for what the guitars are, and the price they are fantastic

Yeah, the new Special and Standard have standard frets.

I have a Warmoth neck with SS6105 frets.

I actually really want to find a black/black Wolfgang bridge pickup pulled from a Striped Series or a Wolfgang Standard for a project I'm working on. I'm liking the idea that it's a bit brighter and edgier than the Peavey version.

Re: EVH Wolfgang vs Charvel

Charvels, EVH's. Nice axes.
Have you tried an ernie ball music man axis?
Its the original EVH signature model guitar. Still beautifully hand built in California. Sure they don't say Eddie Van Halen on the headstock any more but they are superb axes.
Oil rubbed birdseye maple necks. Compound radiuses. Asymmetric neck profile. Floyds. Nice Pickups. Its all there.

I did think of the Axis. I don't care about the EVH part, I just want a great guitar. I don't know much about the Axis.

How does this look?

Re: EVH Wolfgang vs Charvel

I love the stealth models. They just look really cool to me. If you like it and you loved the feel in store, I say go for it

I love my Stealth (pictured on my signature). It's a fantastic playing and sounding guitar. It sounds great and the tuning stability is fantastic. It's the American model so it was not cheap, but I hear good things about the imports as well.

Re: EVH Wolfgang vs Charvel

I have one of the new Wolfgang standards that I like a lot. The only issue I have with it is the pickup route. I wanted to change them out for something different. After I gut the thing I find out neither duncan or dimarzio make anything that will fit. The base plates are rounded and the legs are sshorter. So the routes are not big enough or deep enough. When it comes to pickups your only options are routing or modding the new pickups. Or send the stock ones to SD or someone to have them rewound.
The latter is the suggestion from the SD custom shop.

This thread might just help you.

Re: EVH Wolfgang vs Charvel

That exact charvel is what I've had my eye on for a while haha, great choice!

Definitely! I tried the red burst one. Great guitar for sure but I want that Specific Ocean color but nobody has it. I can only find the HS model.

Re: EVH Wolfgang vs Charvel

Excellent choice!! I'm a lifelong, card-carrying Charvel fanatic. I've been following this thread closely but resisted the urge to post because the discussion ended up being about Wolfgangs only and I couldn't come up with anything that didn't sound troll-like to me. haha
I bought a new Ferrari Red Pro Mod San Dimas in 2010 and I still feel like that guitar is the best "bang for the buck" of any guitar I've bought brand new in 30 years of playing. The newer models like you're looking at are mostly the same as mine, but there's one feature that they changed that makes me a tad jealous: the RECESSED Floyd. The earlier models, like mine, were all surface-mounted, so in other words, dive only.
I have very little experience playing a Wolfgang, so I can't possibly say the Charvel is a better guitar, but I CAN say for certain that for the money, the Pro Mod is one hell of a guitar and you'll love the killer tone, the sweet feel of the neck, the build quality overall is amazing for an axe in the $1,000-ish range.
One more thing I just thought of- mine is made in Japan, are they still? Or are they made in Mexico now, like most other Fender products? I haven't checked.
Best of luck, man! I hope you can track down that awesome green one!
I'll post a gratuitous pic of part of my little family that includes the Pro Mod, I think it's the only pic of it that I have here in my phone. 2nd guitar from left. Other Charvel is a USA Custom Shop Pointy Head Reissue. Cheers!uploadfromtaptalk1428088314505.jpg
