I figure I could unload the EVM12L from my Fender Concert II lower cab, and buy an unloaded/closed back 2x12 cab, along with a new EVM12L Classic to fill it up.

I like mine in a Marshall JCM C212 cab mixed with a V30. The only thing I hate is how heavy the damned thing is on the EV side. I think I should set up that cab with 2 handles.
And yes, if you put two in a sealed cab, you'll change weather patterns.

One of my early rigs was a PV VTM head and a Bassman 2x12 that was loaded with EVM12L's for a while...I guess it sounded alright, I was young and can't really remember it very well...however I do remember it was loud as hell and too damned heavy...

Or ... do I like I did ... ditch the 2x12s and 4x12s ... use a 1x12 EVM12L for everything. Put a mic on it if you're playing live ... and you never have to run your master volume over 2 anywhere. Pretty heavy for a 1x12 ... but lighter than all of the other 2x12s or 4x12s or the two 4x12s I used to use. I still need to join a gym.

Back in the 80's I used EVM12L's a lot - first I had a Marshall 2x12 combo (JMP 2203 head with 2 EV's). After that was stolen, I switched to a JCM800 2203 head with a 2x12 cab with EVs. I loved that rig - it did the clean, chorusly thing really well, and I never minded the dirty sound either. (Although 80's crunch and 21st-century uber-gain are two different things).
I recently unearthed some demo tapes that band made. In hindsight, the older-and-wiser me realizes that rig was too powerful. I relied to much on the preamp for gain, and kept the master throttled back to 2 all the time. The only reason to have a 2x12 was that the cab was wide enough to hold the head.
I can't imagine an application where one EVM12L wouldn't work just as well as a 2x12 cab, unless you're going stereo. In any case, a pair of 1x12's would be easier to move and more flexible (you can take the second cab, or not, depending on the gig).

I have a closed back 2x12 cab I made loaded with one EV and one 90 watt Celestion and it is my favorite cab (over my marshall 4x12 with v30's and 3 other 2x12's cabs i built loaded with various celestions). My Boogie Trem-o-verb head through the EV/Celestion cab SOUNDS SICK seriously that thing roars!
It roars so freakin much that i was admiring the rich tone pummeling everyone in the room at my last jam and as I glanced over my shoulder to bask in the sweet bliss that is "the tone" I looked just in time to see my fresh beer dancing around from the vibrations and subsequently take a dive emptying its entire contents into the top grate of the head.. a few deafening crackles later and after one totally expected yet boneheaded move from a drummer trying to help (here let me yank the power cord out of the wall before anything else pops and then immediately plug it back in before you've had a chance to turn off the amp!) I am now the proud owner of a $1600 paper weight!
haha actually it's all taken apart right now getting a thorough cleaning and I'm hoping some fresh tubes & fuses will bring her back.. otherwise there's a trip to the boogie repair center in my near future..
Moral of the story.. get a cup holder for your mic stand. Or if you're gonna put your beer on your amp (which i had been doing successfully for 20 yrs) make it something stable like a 40oz.

The EVM is one of my favorite speakers. I like my Mesa Mark III and Mark IV combos with their EVMs, and when I add their matching 112 EVM Theile cabs underneath--it makes for a really potent mini-stack.

Hey Bill, how are the palm-mute "chugs" with that setup...if that is something you are into...
Off my own topic: I've been meaning to PM you you about the tone issue I was having with my Boogie (too much mud, etcetera). You had suggested I download a copy of the owner's manual for the "recommended" tone settings.
Well I did, and this amp smokes! A "factory" setting suggested by the manual got me a great Jerry Cantrell "Sludge Factory" tone! This may not mean anything, but I can tell ya, I get goosebumps with that setting!
I guess Boogies are more knob-fiddly than other amp builders. Previously, I had been going in all the wrong directions, now I know better.
Also, I like a good rock/metal tone, and find the Chinese Mesa STR-440's are nice. The Groove Tube GT-6L6-CHP "blackplates" were just too damn harsh and ultra crispy. My next move may be a set of JJ's, or SED Winged-C tubes. I am hearing the Mesa STR-454 are tested/rebranded SED's, but I do not know for sure.
FWIW, I am using the TungSol 12AX7A reissues in V1, and the phase inverter. A set of Electro Harmonix 12AX7EH tubes are in V2 and V3.

I don't do a lot of palm-muting chugs, but the 112 EVM Theile does add a lot of bottom end projection and punch. That speaker will handle as much power as many 412s, and because it is designed using Theile-Small parameters, it will give as much bass as it optimally can. If I were doing that kind of music, I'd definitely be changing a lot of my settings on my Mark III and Mark IV Simul-Class combos. My Mark III Coliseum head and its Mesa Half-back C90/EVM 412 has a tighter, more dynamic bass response--if I needed that "chug"--that is where I would start.
I don't necessarily think they are more twiddly, but the older Mark Series and Caliber Mesas seem to have sweet spots--if you get too far out of the sweet spot, you won't get the best tones from the amp. On the newer Mesas like the Maverick, Lone Star, Stiletto Ace--the sweet spot in the controls seems to be right around the mid position of the knob. Turn everything to 12 o'clock and judiciously season from there. You might not be getting the EXACT tone you're looking for, but you will be getting righteous tone, nonetheless. None of these amps work well by turning everything to TEN.
I'm glad that I was able to help direct you to some different ways of thinking. Sometimes it takes a 2x4 up side the head; sometimes it can be just damn painful--but when the light does go off, it is always a lot of fun. I'm glad to hear that you are re-bonding with your Fifty Caliber. Give yourself some credit for being willing to re-think the problem, and being open to learning. A lot of people aren't, so good for you!
If you want more headroom and detail, I would suggest the Winged C/S.E.D. 6L6s. You might want to check an Ebay-er with the ID, "bmsanborn". I got some SED tubes from him--he knew what to get me for a Mesa.
And the Tung-Sols sound interesting; thanks for the tip.
