EVM12L, Whats so legendary about them?

Re: EVM12L, Whats so legendary about them?

dark?

Mine (the new one) is quite bright and lively, especially compared to Eminence Delta pro 12A.

That's true ,there is 2 khz difference on the top ,but the Delta is flatter and has a tighter bottom.

Re: EVM12L, Whats so legendary about them?

I had one in a Musicman 112 amp for a time. It was my "clean" setting. I found EVM speakers to be cleaner than clean, heavy as lead and louder than hell. They're like taking out earplugs. They're also kinda like standing in a beam of light. If you're outside of the focus, you may not hear it much, but 20 feet away, it'll rip heads off. My drummer had a permanent part in his hair from that "clean" setting. I like 'em!

Re: EVM12L, Whats so legendary about them?

what didnt you like about it?

im mainly using this amp for metal and high gain rockin tones, the huge bottom end and tightness i hear these get sounds interesting to me for this

Too bright/harsh with a very flat EQ response. The V30s I was also using at the time did a better job of smoothing out the top end and were generally easier on the ears.

Re: EVM12L, Whats so legendary about them?

It is all apples and oranges depending on the gear (!!!), but I find V30's sound rather kazoo-like. Anyone can hum a kazoo, and it is going to sound the same. Only the pitch changes. I think V30's sound "zippery" and coarse, as if a zipper is pulled down a heavy winter jacket.

Anything effects everything, so I know the V30 tone is not proper for my gear. I know my ears have been rocked hard by V30's when other fella's play them.

I use the EVMs in my Mesa Mark IIIs and Mark IV 112 combo amps; 112 Mesa Theile Cabs; and my Mesa 412 Halfback Cabs.

I love them!

Re: EVM12L, Whats so legendary about them?

I have a wide body Mark IV combo that I installed a EVM 12L into and it really changes the sound. This speaker is whatever you tell the amp you want. If your in channel 3 and you want overdrive or distortion just dial it in. The speaker wil not color the amps sound. I also have a 12L in a Boogafunk closed back thiel cab that I use with the MK IV bringing it down to ohms which is very cool. More bass, low end from the thiel cab and lots of open sound from the combo. I've also tried it with just the thiel cab alone and its amazing. I tried the thiel cab with a Marshall Super lead 800 head once and it rocked. I'm going to probably get a wide body head cabinet from mesa and just use the thiel cab eventually to make things easier to carry around.

I don't think the OP is still looking for answers 5 years after the fact.

OT - it is a great speaker. I have one in my 80's Mesa halfback cab and it rulez.

Your question about what is legendary about EVM12l speaker, well first of all they are unique in the world of guitar speakers because of their neutrality i.e not subtract or add to the signal sent from the amp. That alone is pretty difficult to achieve and explains why they need to be fed with some decent signal to get things moving, nevertheless i just swapped a celestion g12 100 hot for an ev12l that has been with me a long time and suddenly i hear,....well just more of my playing such as tiny movements of finger vibrato. The down side of this speaker is also its strongest point that is there is no current production guitar amp that will blow this thing. yet its so sensitive so yes you need to turn things up a bit, but its worth it.
