Evo/Evo VS. Custom/Jazz

Which pickup set would give me the sound I'm looking for in the given wood combination? EvoB/EvoN or Custom/Jazz?

They will be going a PRS CE 22. The CE has a mahogany back with a maple top, maple bolt-on neck, and rosewood fingerboard. The amp setup is currently an AVT150, but I'll be getting a new amplifier soon.

-I play progressive, intrumental metal/shred
-I play 80 % leads
-Need something to cooperate very well under high-gain
-Must cut through with ease
-Also must be able to handle thick, chunky fifths
-Always standard tuning
-I like the sound of elevated mids, so that each note has a thick bite to it under high-gain. It cannot, however, sound shrilly. I really like Steve Vai's tone. Thick, bitey, and smooth.

I know you already Pm'd for this, but id say the evo is what you are looking for. im a huge duncan fanboy, ive never bought anything else, but i gotta admit that the evo's that came in my jem are superb, especially the neck Evo.

In this wood combo though? I've heard they can sound like mush in mahogany.

I Would Definately Go For The Custom/jazz Route, Remember The 21 Day No Suck Policy Duncan Has...and If You Dont Like That Combo I Would Try A
Jb/59 Or Jb/fs Combos.

i didnt like the EVO set that i had in my RG before. too tight and too much definition for my taste, so that went out almost immediately.

i also had a custom in my PRS which i swapped for a JB. if you play leads 80% of the time, i strongly suggest that you get the JB. for me, the custom is a bit too tight for expressive solo's, and i also found the custom to be too chunky on rhythm... (my PRS has a wide-fat mahogany neck and a stoptail, which may be the case). the JB is not too chunky but just perfect. the JB is also more versatile than the custom. awesome for progressive metal... instrumental or non-instrumental. i play in a death metal band and a ska band on the side just for kicks, and the JB suits me just fine. JB's sound great in my guitars but it may sound different to yours. cheers!

I've had the EVO bridge in my Charvel which is Mahogany and maple and it wasn't great. Look at the Duncan Full Shred. It's very chunky and middy with amazing clarity and very defined. Judging by the Tone Chart, I think it would be well voiced for mahogany...

You've also got to remember this is an SD forum and theres a little bias going on here.

I think the EVO's are great with basswood and alder but... On mahogany Im not sure...

I think the fullshred would fit you well also.

i have an evo neck in my mahogany body/ bolt-on maple neck/rosewood fingerboard RG. IMO they don't sound mushy or muddy. I like the tone, the leads still cut through. They sound a little fuller, less shrilly, but have a teeny more bottom end than the L-500XL in the bridge.
one thing though, i'm tuned to D... i guess in standard tuning it won't be a problem too.

I own a Full shred and Evo Bridge, both in alder guitars with floyd trems, i find them to sound simular, the full shred has more bite, and more bottom though, where as the evo has more middle, the evo has a slightly higher output too, but it does only seem slight. overall they arent hugely different, the Evo has a smoother sound.

id say an Evo Set would work well, but maybe a Full shred/Evo (bridge/neck) combo would be better with mahogany, but just a maybe, i like the Full shred and Evo bridge a lot.
For shredding and instrumental lead work the Evo is definutly my favourite neck pickup, its smooth warm and tight at the same time.

the EVO is very progressive sounding
it has the best "cut" i ever heard
stays clear under intense gain
it very chunky
has real good mids

the custom is also very good but the EVO suits your needs more
