Exotic instruments.

I found a good deal on a used balalaika and it arrived today. It's a funky little Russian three string guitar (but they're available in sizes all the way up to contrabass) It sounds pretty cool just noodling around. I'm keen to learn the proper Russian playing style.

Who else dabbles in cool and unusual instruments?

Re: Exotic instruments.

The most exotic thing I've got these days is a Jackson without a Floyd.

Re: Exotic instruments.

Oh man, I wish. I want a bouzouki, a mandolin and a Hurdy gurdy. Get my old Irish tunes on.

I just heard of the hurdy gurdy last week. I thought my friend was joking when he said the name. He showed me a video of one and I recoiled in horror.

Horror? There are much stupider contemporary instruments right now.

Sad state of affairs indeed.

But on a serious note.... I dabble in some ukulele and banjo and also play various Indian and African percussion instruments

nonono, hurdy-gurdy is medieval drone.

GURDYO))).

Re: Exotic instruments.

I know that. It's in interesting instrument. It uses a crank handle.

I was saying the 'djent stick' is a contemporary instrument, not the gurdy.

Ah got it. I wonder what would be a good djentstick from olden days...

Re: Exotic instruments.

i can play didgeridoo. not very well, but yeah.

love hand drums.

and I want to learn how to play mandolin and sitar.

Re: Exotic instruments.

I play Mando and Banjo. I'm better at the Mando, and I can only play them well enough to fool people who don't play them into thinking I'm good. If I play banjo around a real banjo player, I look like a bumbling idiot. When I play by myself, I actually sound pretty good.

Re: Exotic instruments.

I think the djentstick is fantastic. Hopefully this willy inspire those guys to come up with something that can't be played on one bass string nailed to a plank of wood with an EMG in there for good measure. I mean for god's sake, the bridge is a Lego piece.

Re: Exotic instruments.

The sad part is that they're being built in numbers enough to attempt to sell them. Either they're sorely mistaken about how supply and demand works or the djent players can't tell when they've officially reached complete self parody.

It's a genre named after an onomatopoeia, named after a technique. In a few years it's going to come to "Yeah dude I play in a krunn metal band drawing influences from squidge and blinnndt".

Oh man these things were annoying during the last world cup. Sounded like an army of Bees on TV.

Tried your hands on a Tabla... :), I once knew a drummer who was professional Tablarist before, he took to drums guitar. He rocked. Lost touch with him.

Cool! One thing I really like about the middle eastern music I've had exposure to is the percussion. Great stuff.

Re: Exotic instruments.

One fascinating instrument that I've been listening to a lot of lately is the bazantar. It's essentially a double bass loaded with many sympathetic strings. Very cool, haunting sound.

Re: Exotic instruments.

I managed to find the only Balalaika teacher in Australia, he lives about an hour from me. I just got a call from him and he is the most Russian sounding dude I have ever heard. He has a show at a theater ensemble I'm gonna check out first.

That bazantar sounds amazing. What I wouldn't give to get my hands on one of those.

Thanks for clearing this up for me. I thought a Djent stick was something you used to beat a guitar player that palm mutes all the time, tunes too low and uses a ridiculous amount of gain.
