Experience with Temu/Aliexpress Guitars?

Anyone here have recent experience with guitar purchases from Temu or Aliexpress?

I took a chance on a "Chender" Tom Delonge strat copy from a top-rated seller on Temu that gets here Saturday and I'm kind of excited about it based on the few reviews I've managed to find out in the wild. It cost $225 shipped and I already got $200 credit back on it through Temu to put toward another purchase, which is crazy!

I'm not looking for a perfect copy of the real Fender, just a cool looking, decent playing pop-punk inspired guitar that I won't cry over if my toddler knocks around. Plus, I'm planning to get an actual Squier Mini-Strat to make him his own TD-style guitar to match mine!

I've never been able to justify buying an original TD Strat or even the newer reissues. I've checked out quite a few and they are all "ok" guitars at best. There's no way I'm paying $800-$1200 for an "ok" guitar with only minimal appointments (one pickup, one knob, non-locking tuners, etc) in today's market, so I'm clearly not the target demographic for the "real" thing.

I actually feel that way about a lot of guitars at this point. Like Gibson Les Pauls... I've owned a couple and played a bunch over the years. My early production Epi LP is the only one I wish I still had. Moving forward, I know for a fact that I'm never going to convince myself to pay $1500-$3000 for a proper Gibson LP again, so I'm no longer the target demographic for their products. But reviews of some of the Chinese-made LP and SG replicas out there are quite convincing and might be fun to check out!

Apparently, some of the "replica" Martin and Taylor acoustics around the $300-$400 price point are also surprisingly well made and punch very far above their price points in terms of tonality and playability. I suppose if you get good enough at copying something, you'll eventually recreate pretty much the exact thing you're trying to copy. It seems we've reached that point with some of these products!

I get that not everyone is a fan of either buying from China or the idea of buying fakes/replicas of existing products, but if you're not buying these guitars to try and dupe other people for a profit and are only buying them to modify for yourself and/or keep in a personal collection and never plan to pay the price for an original in the first place, I can't see much of a moral issue buying these types of products while they're available.

Curious what others' experiences have been? Not looking for "moral" or political opinions on the subject...

Not a guitar, but I bought last year a Musiclily big brass block from Amazon. I have three others - Floyd Rose & FU-Tone - and the chinese one is the only one that is rusty. Not corrosion, talking hundreds of rust dots all over. Still does the job in the guitar cavity, but caveat emptor.

I've purchased dozens of Musiclily parts and I'd say 95% have been great.

I've used their machined brass trems to replace PRS SE/S2 bridges, I've used their pickguards, knobs, and switches with good luck, and their newer locking tuners (the ones that resemble Schaller/Allparts models) are actually surprisingly good! I've bought a couple sets and like them better than the cheap-o's from Guyker, Saphue, etc.

That said, a lot of Musiclily parts follow a tier system, where "pro" parts are low-to-mid tier and "ultra" tends to represent their higher quality, more refined options.

I am curious, too. Not for myself, but I know some younger people who want to get into modding stuff, and I'd love to recommend cheaper things out there.

Well, I'll definitely keep you posted about this first one. Hopefully FedEx doesn't do evil things to my package, LOL!

Already eyeing a couple others, assuming this one goes well: Explorer type, an Iommi sig SG, a BC Rich Warlock with a "Floyd" (looks like it could be a direct swap for the real thing, no routing), and/or maybe one of the Taylor replica acoustics people have been digging

I don't like that many of them don't use their own brand name. Apparently the usual quality is good enough that they could live on their own.

It seems that sometimes sellers break guitars with flaws before shipping and then claim transport damage, to get some money out of an otherwise unsellable instrument,

I ordered a knockoff Prince MadCat Tele from Aliexpress, cost me about $220 Canadian funds shipped! The top is obviously photo flame and it has a couple high frets, hardware isn’t great but it actually doesn’t sound or feel terrible! I plan to do some pickup swaps, better hardware and a bit more setup work.

i've had good luck with guyker and musiclily parts. I have a bunch of temu/aliexpress guitars and they are great. obviously they need a little tlc after the fact but most can be great players with a little love.

I bought 2 Les Paul's off of AliExpress just to see for my dang self how good they were.

One was a beautiful quilt top. The knobs were a bit misplaced from a real LP. The book match wasn't perfect.
I pulled the pickup and replaced the tuners and that was a good guitar for the price and effort.
I gave it to one of my kids' friends.

The other LP was a camo Zakk Wylde model and it had one high fret like #19 or so. I swapped pickups and it was just ok for the price.
I sold it to my other guitarists kid for a loss and he loves it as a beginner.

For the price they were just ok.
But now I know.also for what's it's worth, I swap pickups and tuners out of my Gibsons too.

If you want my opinion.... I would recommend a used Epiphone or LTD over the ones I got from AliExpress : provided they were close on price. (Which is getting Harder and harder to find these days)

I know Guyker gets some hate here on the forum
But I have had nothing but good results from the parts I have purchased

Roller bridges
Tuners
Tremolo

yeah i mean it's all about expectations vs reality. are they top of the line parts? no of course not. but they are inexpensive and a big improvement over the cheapo stuff that gets put on inexpensive guitars.
