Experienced Studio guys... (mic pre)

I was offered a Rolls RP220 tube mic-preamp for $75, which seems like a good deal to me, however, I can't seem to find alot of info or reviews about it. Was wondering if maybe any of you studio guys may have used one of these mic pres or just have knowledge about whether its a solid piece of gear or not? $75 for a 2 channel tube mic pre seems like a good price either way, but I don't want to get something with issues even if it is a good price.

You might find more information about it under the name Bellari. Kind of an entry level tube mic pre, but at least it is a true high plate voltage tube design as opposed to the many starved plate pretenders. I remember trying one out years ago and it wasn't particularly pristine or transparent, more of a kind of fuzziness to it. For $75 it gives you a good character option for the front end of a digital recording setup, but I wouldn't want to be relying on it as my main mic pre, because the color it imparts would not always be a welcome addition. At that price it would also be worth asking a few pertinent questions as to its working condition.

hey thanks wah wah. As far as my situation, i've always just wanted to try a tube mic pre, I've already got another micpre that i use now. So, from what you said, this unit might have somewhat of a vintage sound, ala 60s/70s fuzzy warmth? That actually sounds kind of intriguing to me, at least for some applications.

As far as the condition, i was told its essentially brand new, used only a handful of times.

Yeah, in that case I would think that you would probably get some use out of it. It's always good to have options at the front end. You might really like what it does, and it hasn't cost you an arm to get to check it out.
