Explain in detail the procedures you use to change electric guitar strings.

For some that are on the forum might not have changed strings before, but would like to know the procedure. Its costly to pay for this to be done in a shop. There are different methods some use , but is there a proper way it should be done.

Re: Explain in detail the procedures you use to change electric guitar strings.

The only instruments I have that require any special care are the ones with floating bridges. But honestly, that's a mistake you only make once.

I take the string off. I put the new one on. Then I drink a beer. Six strings, six beers? Not a coincidence by any stretch of the imagination.

Ah . . . now I get why people like 7 & 8 string guitars. :beerchug:

Be cautious when changing strings. There are those who do it differently. Use caution when watching videos on changing strings its like any other info on the internet not everything you see or read is correct. I do not loosen off all strings at once then cut them then start restringing. I loosen one string at a time cut it then replace with a new string then tune it then slightly stretch the string by pulling up at the twelve fret and fifth fret you might have to do this 3 or 4 times till it tunes. Then continue to do same with each string. Removing all six strings at once dramatically changes the pressure exerted on the neck of the guitar. Relieving this pressure and then quickly adding pressure back by putting on new strings can cause some serious problems for the instrument. To keep the guitar from going out of tune, put the string through the eyelet bring it underneath back towards you then pull up top then turn the key, adding a little pressure to the string as you slowly wind. Then the cable is locked and won't slip causing it to go out of tune.

This is how I do mine. Then once a year it goes in for cleaning and full setup.

Yeah tons of ways to do it...

Personally I don't like the 1 off 1 on as I like to condition fretboard/ polish frets etc. I also don't like the Martin way of tying the string, I find it brings no benefit.

Re: Explain in detail the procedures you use to change electric guitar strings.

As I bring the new strings up to pitch
I always fret at the 12th fret and play the octave

I have skipped this and tuned the whole thing one octave too high
Pulled the bridge slap.off the face of a cheap acoustic
Dramatically in the dead of night with a loud pop

Re: Explain in detail the procedures you use to change electric guitar strings.

Depends... If Im in a hurry, and if the fretboard looks tidy, Ill go one string at at time.
Fretboard dirty or needs oiled, I remove them all so I can clean the board.

Either way, On my floyd guitars, I take a plastic ruler, wrap it in a soft cloth and slide it behind the back of the floyd, under the saddle locking bolts. Keeps the floyd stable.

If Im going to clean or oil the board:
Then slack all the strings, cut em off up by the tuning pegs so I dont have to fish the curly cues thru the bridge if its a hard tail and there is less chance of scratching the body. Remove the old strings , clean/oil the board and restring, tune, enjoy..
With having the ruler under the floyd, I tune the guitar to pitch, remove the ruler and then retune. If the floyd set up properly to where its nice and level, it should already be pretty close to spot on when the ruler is removed.

If not cleaning and or oiling, slack on string, cut off by peg, remove, replace, tune. Repeat till all are done, retune.

Also, once the new strings are on, Ill put my index finger under each string and pull it upwards away from the board alittle bit to help seat and stretch it before I tune. This eliminates or greatly reduces having to retune as strings settle and stretch..

Re: Explain in detail the procedures you use to change electric guitar strings.

If you see my Elixir thread, apparently I don't know anymore. ;) The dumb thing is that I got really good at setting up a strat with a floating bridge and vintage tuners.

For non vintage tuners I used to do the one-over, rest-under method. Now I just do the Taylor method of all under. It's working well.

If you want to make it easy, just get Planet Waves tuners that lock and cut. ;)

I usually take 3 off and restring, then other 3 off and repeat. Make sure you have sufficient winds (around 2-3) around the tuning peg. Too little will cause string slippage. Too many and you increase the tension on the post which can lead to breakages.

Oh, and don't forget to stretch out the newly fitted string!

Re: Explain in detail the procedures you use to change electric guitar strings.

Hard to describe with just words, but finding a good video (like above) or, best- having a good friend take time and show you will answer any questions. Locking tuners make things a lot easier (no wraps!) and with my Steinbergers, the strings have a ball on each end, so it just drops in, you turn a few times and it is perfect.
I always do all at once (I don't leave strings on as I replace them) as it gives me a chance to clean the frets and fingerboard.

Re: Explain in detail the procedures you use to change electric guitar strings.

My technique: insert string - tighten nut - tune to pitch - cut (locking tuners)

Re: Explain in detail the procedures you use to change electric guitar strings.

I take all of the strings off and clean the fretboard. Then I start from the middle and work out–G, D, B, A, E, E. I bend/notch the string (opposite direction of the way the tuner will move) at the point/part where the string comes out of the tuner (when the string is straight but not tight.) Then I cut off the excess...dangling excess strings flopping around at the headstock drive me nuts.

Definitely several methods out there, find the one that works for you.

I change one string at a time starting with the high E.

Yeah, I'm all under. Never understood the one over.

Yup, I usually just fold the string packaging, but same end result. Just too keep the stress off the posts/ knife edges.

I'm looking at a 12 string for just that reason.

When I change strings, I always unstring and restring one at a time. In the nut use a graphite pencil and draw in a little on the slot for some lubricant. For wound strings I always pull the string taut then pull back one fret. Wrap the excess around the string post once and then tighten and bring up to tension. Tug on the string to seat it and retune. For plain strings, it's the exact same process, except I pull back a fret and a half and then wrap around the post twice. I do this every time I restring and I never really have tuning problems except for when I'm really going hard.

Yeah, I'm all under. Never understood the one over.

On the wound strings, the one over actually locks the string in because the windings are holding each other down. With the plain strings, when you wrap twice around the top, the string sort of ties itself down on the tuner.

I should just admit I have a problem and go buy a harp today.

If you buy a harp, you'll have to keep it classy and switch to a good wine. I recommend a nice glass of Moscato to go with your new instrument.
