Explorer Bass Refinish thread of doom

Re: Explorer Bass Refinish thread of doom

Yeah its sanding sealer they have to use it to fill the grain other wise the finish would be filled with holes and flaws.

Re: Explorer Bass Refinish thread of doom

Alright suckas, today I finished putting up all the plastic sheets I was going to use, covered the bathroom top to bottom with plastic sheeting, just like Dexter would. Also grainfilled the sides and roundovers on the body because the grain in those places was quite open, unlike the front and rear faces of the body.

And I got the first coats of primer down on the body and neck. Not very exciting, but there ya go. Tomorrow I'll spray the black edges. I'm still unsure if I should paint the back entirely black or if I should burst the back as well as the front. decisions decisions.

Oh Oh Oh!!!!

The decal got here today. I love my decal guy. He's in the UK, and each decal costs 20 GBP, but I don't care, his work is so great!

Blacker than the blackest black times infinity!!!

I just did the back and sides today. had a couple of tiny runs on the sides, so tomorrow I think I'll sand them level, then spray the silver on the front. When I shoot the black burst, I can go over the areas that have runs as well, and with any luck it'll all be smooth. Then onto clear coat, and then I get to wait a few weeks for the lacquer to cure.

Looks great already, I think. Since I made a paper mask for the front, I also decided to test out my spray technique for the actual burst, shooting straight onto the paper. I think I should be able to get really good results.

Also this is what I look like while spraying, minus nitrile gloves.

DETHKLOOOOK!!!! :headbang:

Looks nice... but I`m curious as to why you didn`t spray the silver first and use the black to do the burst? The black will easily cover the silver, and you can use the black on just the edges, savin paint and letting you control the burst with the gun /can....

Works both ways, but just seems a bit backwards to me.. :friday:

Re: Explorer Bass Refinish thread of doom

I was actually following a stewmac tutorial for a 3-tone sunburst which suggested spraying the edges first, then the amber on the front, then blending the amber and the edges with a dark brown.

I suppose it would work spraying the silver first too, but getting into all the nooks and crannies left quite a bit of black on the paper mask (which would've been silver if I'd done it first) so maybe the mask/edges first idea was a good thing.

Bro- A word of caution when spraying in the bathroom. Do not use the overhead fan! BOOM! (Unless of course you're using water base).

Re: Explorer Bass Refinish thread of doom

Thanks for the concern bro, but I think I should be fine. I only spray one coat at a time, so there isn't a massive build up of fumes inside the spray area.

This is the 2nd refinish I've done like this, without any problems, not using waterbase.. I turn on the fan about 10-15 mins before I start spraying, and turn it off a good deal later after I've finished spraying, so the fumes are getting evacuated gradually, again without significant build up. Also I think my fan might be an induction motor, which doesn't create sparks so I should be fine that way too.

The alternative of not using the fan does not appeal to me at all...because then the fumes would keep accumulating in the spray area and would inevitably leak out into my apartment, and I'd be forced to breathe it all in. Not a fun prospect.

Re: Explorer Bass Refinish thread of doom

One quick coat from a rattle can should be ok. The fan in my spray booth has an explosion proof motor sealed in epoxy. Just watching your back.

I'm late to the game and I'm at work so all the pics are blocked...

But are you spraying finish in your bathroom? What kind of finish? What are you using for exhaust?

Too busy at work to read the whole thing and your post concerned me. I hope I am missing something but...

Is your bathroom exhaust fan explosion proof? Unlikely. See where I am going with this?

Re: Explorer Bass Refinish thread of doom

again, read the thread! (specifically this page)

Re: Explorer Bass Refinish thread of doom

Again, too busy. Working.

You must have addressed though so I'm glad you're ok.

Re: Explorer Bass Refinish thread of doom

Masked off the sides and got the front done.

Next up, burst edges and fixing the tiny runs. Then tomorrow, clear coats!

Re: Explorer Bass Refinish thread of doom

you guys are great for worrying about me, but like I said, I've done this before and had no issues whatsoever, so I really don't think it'll be a problem :)
