if I had to pick one it would be an explorer. I don't really like the shape of either of them, but I think V's are hideous.

Re: Explorer or flying V, Which would you prefer

To tell the truth, it's really difficult to pick one over the other. I like Explorers because of all that arse they seem to have behind them, but I LOVE Vs because:

1. They come with their own stand.
2. Upper fret access is usually amazing
3. They are the only guitars that, while standing, offer the ladies a completely unfettered view of my epic, jiggly gut.

Why not do both? That Dean ML feels like a V that you can sit down with and comes with it's own stand, too! Just be prepared to hear stuff like "Yeah! Dime!" and "Play some Pantera!!!!!" if you ever play it out.

Re: Explorer or flying V, Which would you prefer

In the 80ties I was running around with a white Japanese Flying V. Never liked it too much as I like to play sitting and the thing moves around.

What I really wanted was an Explorer, it just never worked out until 2007, when I got a 1993 Gibson Explorer. I assumed Explorer and V sound the same and the Explorer is better to play seated.

I always had an image problem with the flying V, as there are very chessy bands running around using them, e.g. Edguy.

But the Explorer didn't work out. It's form completely throws off my right hand position and the whole fretboard is shifted so I can't easily play blind.

The sound is not the same, the Explorer (as a tendency but mine in particular) sounds extremely hot and aggressive no matter what pickups you put in. A Flying V is more of a saturated, powerful sound, not as angry.

The Explorer is sold, a Flying V is back on the "probably" list of guitars for the next rotations.

I also *love* Flying Vs in Korina with the through-body tailpiece, but I think a white one with stop tailpiece is first.

I love both, but I've owned a V before and never had an Explorer so...

Re: Explorer or flying V, Which would you prefer

Explorer all the way for me. I think they look "tuff".

Re: Explorer or flying V, Which would you prefer

Explorer for me.

Or you can merge the two together and get a vexplorer.
For those who can't decide. (results may vary. may cause acute forum unrests)

Re: Explorer or flying V, Which would you prefer

A few years ago, I would've said "Explorer by a mile," but now it's Explorer just barely. I'd love to own a Korina V.

V's are super comfortable sitting down - you just have to play them classical style, with the neck cocked upwards and your leg between the V.

Why are you posting in here? I thought you hated these threads?

But then you have to look to find the right frets.

I think the true advantage of Vs is that you need to practice standing up. Sitting down is bad since you won't do that on stage.

Re: Explorer or flying V, Which would you prefer

Explorer
I never liked the looks of the Gibby V, I used to have a Ibanez pointy Jackson/Rhoads style V and I played in a metal band it was black so it fit the bill, but always banging into amps, bandmates, mic stands,drums..it was kind of a pain, impossible to play sitting, but it looked cool! I dont think I will ever own any V again though
Explorer...hmmm played a few destroyers loved them, Gibbys nice big slab of mahogany and hockey stick headstock..I would love to have one, natural finish..they just seem to ooze tone and timeless classic coolness

My #1 is an Explorer, so that was a pretty easy call to make. It's more comfortable sitting down, and I think it sounds better. I've had the opportunity to A/B an Explorer and V with the same pickups, fingerboard wood, and strings, and they do not sound the same. The V is a bit more edgy and midrangy while the Explorer just sounds bigger and not so in your face.

Re: Explorer or flying V, Which would you prefer

sorry,

bec no one ever made an Explorer or Flying V thread/poll in this forum,

these guitars have an unusual but classic shape, which some guitar makers are copying,

so I decided to make a poll for it,

thanks for the replies :approve:

Re: Explorer or flying V, Which would you prefer

Greetings,
This is my first post and I hope that I am on the right track with this question.

I prefer the shape of the Explorer because it is easier to balance when either sitting or standing. That is my preference only.
However, there is an on-line article by George Gruhn that I found very insightful. He mentions that, in theory, the neck-thru construction of the Firebird was thought to be the most rigid coupling mechanism and hence should have greater sustain. Yet, in practice, he maintains that set-neck guitars such as Les Pauls and Explorers are the sustain champions due to the amount of mass behind the bridge.
Here is the link: http://www.gruhn.com/articles/firebird.html

Obviously, sustain is only a single factor when choosing a guitar. As another member pointed out, access to upper frets is one area where the Flying V has no peers.
I don't think one is better than the other; it is a matter of applicability and player preference.
