..Explorer trim...kinda silly question...

The story is as follows, bought my '89 Gibson Explorer about two years ago...was a steal and couldn't pass it up.... It was black and the paint was really beat (razor blade cuts...) So I stripped it down to see what the wood looked like underneath with the intentions of just repainting it black...
Discovered absolutely no knots and the grain was amazing, so opted to clear coat it.....so now it's done and it is gorgeous!
I'm having a hard time deciding on really silly stuff like white, black or mirrored pickguard, Pu rings, gold/ chrome hardware etc.

So my question is: Does anyone here have/know where to find pics of Mahogany Explorer's/ V's...anything with a natural finish..

...or any ideas???

this is not really something I'm good at, but the black pickguard, black P/U's, Black knobs just looks dumb!...I have to replace all of it anyway, P/U's are stock (SH-6's going in!), pickguard is etched and warped, so it's gone!!

..."guitar accessorizing" is not my forte' at all.....so what do ya'll think?

any help is appreciated....

I dunno where to find pics, but I personally think a black or white pickguard with gold hardware and gold speedknobs would look killer!

Ahh, looks like I'm a little late. I was going to say Zebra pups and black pup rings. For knobs, I'd go with those cool white Fender-style ones with the black rubber grips (like on my Strat!). You can get those knobs at Stew-Mac, but they only fit solid pot shafts (I hammered mine on :laugh2: )

Re: ..Explorer trim...kinda silly question...

This is a 1976 Explorer, unmodified. The picture is a little dark, but the hardware is all gold, pup rings are black, Speed knobs are gold, pg is white. I don't really like gold hardware, but that's the way it came.

This sounds like what you have decided to do.

Explorers Rock!!!! :headbang:

That's what I have with my guitar. The stock epiphone pickup in the neck with the gold rubbed off with steel whool, and a creme superdistortion in the bridge.

Black knobs look horrible though. Ick. I bought this guitar used with them, which means someone actually replaced the original knobs with these things.

Re: ..Explorer trim...kinda silly question...

I look forward to seeing the pictures when you're done Jeff.

There is just some thing about Explorers. Not everybody gets the appeal, which to me adds to the appeal. Plus, it keeps the prices down. Everybody wants a Les Paul and that's why a Standard cost $2k.

Rock on Explorer fans,

I like everything you decided on except I'd go with the black pickguard. Just looks meaner to me, but hay it's gonna be a bada$s guitar either way. Natural wood is my favorite and I've wanted a natural explorer ever since I saw Hetfield playing one on S & M. :32:
