What would be a good bridge pickup for an explorer style guitar. I was thinking a JB but just wanted to check any see what you guys thought. I mostly play anything from Punkish Metal stuff to some hardrock tunes.
Thanks for the feedback in advance

Re: Explorers

I thought from your other post it was the alder one but now im confussed?

a Jb would sound good in either though.

Re: Explorers

My Explorers carried Customs in the bridge and 59's in the neck and sounded absolutely phenomenal. However both were Mahogany. Which Explorers are Alder nowadays?

Fibers is a Hamer

Re: Explorers

I had an '83 Gibson Explorer (mahogany, not korina) with the '59 neck/JB bridge combo, and it was perfect IMO.

Re: Explorers

Any pickup that sounds great in a Les Paul or SG will also sound great in an Explorer.

A set of 59's, a Jazz neck & JB bridge....even Seths or Antiquitys.

Re: Explorers

I don't think you'd like a JB in alder, they don't have enough bass for my ears. A Custom would work wonders, though.

But we dont know if Bass is what Fiber wants.

Re: Explorers

I support the JB in the bridge position of the explorer 100%, it's a great humbucker, if you ever think about neck pick-up, I say Jazz Humbucker

JB's sound fine in alder. There's alot of guys with alder Super-Strats who swear by the JB.

The Custom would sound fine too if that's the tone a player likes. :) A little more sizzle and grain to the treble with the Custom.

IMO, any great humbucker would sound fine in an Explorer whether it's alder, mahogany or Korina. Just comes down to personal taste and playing style. Explorers are simply not that differant sounding from a Flying V, Les Paul, SG or any other solid body Gibson guitar. They're differant...obviously! But through a cranked Marshall they all sound very similar.

Claptons still sounded exactly like Clapton back in the 60's whether he was playing a Les Paul, a 335, an Explorer or a SG! Back in the days when all Gibsons came with one pickup model and one pickup model only. Though they did mix alnico 2 and alnico 5 magnets...even in the same guitar. But not for any reason...they just didn't care.

Re: Explorers

I love the 59 bridge model in the neck!!! Just wanted to toss that out there.

Like Lew said, back then they all came with the same pups.. Life was much simpler then.. Amazing how much time Ive spent comparing and deciding on pickups and pup combos.. Yeah, Im glad to have so many options to tailor my sound, but back in those days, they used the same gear but sounded so different. Further proof that its in the hands..
