External Power Amp?

I'm not sure if this is even possible, but I was wondering if there are power amps that you can buy and somehow hook up to an existing amp. I bought a Laney combo amp awhile ago when i didn't know much about gear at all, just knew tubes were better than solid state. So I got this laney with a tube in it. Problem is along the way I realized that what I HAD was a tube pre-amp and what I needed was that AND some power tubes. I don't have the budget now to get another amp, I was hoping there was a way to complement the one i
have now, a 2x12 120 watt combo.

Well you could always use the effects loop send/preamp out into the poweramp and just hook the poweramp up to the cab... Wouldn't that work?

Though if that amp is a hybrid you'll still get a solid state tone because of the solid state preamp *even if it does have 1 preamp tube in it.*

Interesting. That's along the lines of what I was hoping for. Anybody else have something to add?

The thing with that is you'd maybe still need a load on the not used poweramp of the combo (I'm not excactly sure if this is the case with SS) cause otherwise it would probably kill your transformer.

Oh! **** yea I didn't think about that.

hmm not sure what you could do, maybe use a headswitcher pedal?

BUMP! What I'm mainly looking for is the ability to have an amp that can produce nice overdrive just by forcing the power tubes to break up as opposed to lame ss overdrive. I want that sound. If this turns out to be impractical i guess I'll have to wait a few years for an orange, but I really don't want to do that.

It's not the case with SS, it won't hurt not to have a load on it.

But, if I get this right, you want a tube power amp to use in place of the SS power amp in your existing amp. A good tube power amp will cost as much as a tube head, especially if you are shopping used. Not to mention it will be a PITA to hook up. I would save up some money and sell the Laney and try to find a nice used tube amp. Oranges are expensive, but you can probably find a good deal on a used all tube Laney or something similar.
