Extra pup in a strat

I love my Am Deluxe strat. Is it possible to squeeze in a forth pup (the single coil size humbucker (rails pup ) & add an on off switch for it to work either separately or along with the original 3 pups the guitar comes with.
Any suggestions.I miss the double coil sound on this guitar.
Nor sure if it will void the guitar warranty by any chance though.

Re: Extra pup in a strat

Warranties on guitars are usually for defects in workmanship such as warped necks, broken trussrods (as long as you don't break it), bad fretjobs, bad paint adhesion, dead electronics from the factory, and stuff like that. Changing the electronics shouldn't affect the warranty.

Wire it to a push-pull like that but skip the wire going to the 5-way.

I am pretty sure Fender voids your warranty if you do any sort of mod to the guitar that takes it away from stock.

You could probably check with Fender, maybe send customer service an e mail....just odnt hold your breath waiting for a reply as they can be slow in responding.

Re: Extra pup in a strat

When you cram too many PU's in a guitar, you create problems with coils & magnetic fields interferring with each other. Also, a PU has to sit under the right part of the string to get good tones, and not a dead or low energy spot. This is why the HHH concept never got off the ground. A middle HB has string node & magnetic field issues which make it sound very poor in comparison to how that same PU would sound in the neck or bridge. You are proposing to do the same thing to a Strat. Adding PU's doesn't give them a usable tone.

Re: Extra pup in a strat

Well, you CAN put two single sized pickups into a humbucker slot as long as they don't have that triangular thing that extends at the bottom. Some have done it.

I've done it that way (2 Lils in a hum slot). Works fine. While there may actually be some detectable/audible change in the tone vs each pickup being in its own guitar in its own bridge slot, that is counter-balanced by the tonal variety you gain.

Re: Extra pup in a strat

The guitar is an American Deluxe with 3 single coil pups that has an S1 switching system ( a pushpot siwtch) which adds another 5 pup settings to the regular 5.I guess this will make things more complicated. However I wonder if I could replace one of the pups with a rails single coil size humbucker & still use S1 switching. If it's going to mess things up I think it's best to stick with what I have.
