Fads

Re: Fads

Club Gigging with a Fender Twin? hahahahaha

Sorry, if you don't get it, you will -once your shoulder needs replaced.

Re: Fads

The electric guitar is a fad in and of itself and it is going out of style.

-no worry, its gone out of style as the first choice for popular music 4 or 5 times since the 1950s. -and almost the entire decade of the 1980s it was second fiddle to Keys for charting hits on the radio -especially once the Yamaha DX7 came on the scene and dominated.

It will come back again and again (not enough to save Guitar Center though) -because the guitar has several advantages over synth and most every other instrument -the most obvious is the live on the fly voicing permutations for performance -and with the advent of more and more synth pedal power at a guitarists feet to modulate those voicing choices -it's here to stay until long after you or I are gone.

Re: Fads

Apparently music as a whole was a fad too, and it's being replaced by rap & hip hop.

Another fad - 'percussive' acoustic playing.

Re: Fads

Back to the whole relic'd/distressed/antiqued be a poseur industry. I had a friend who bought an American Pro Strat and had it sent off to some company to relic it. -He paid the cost of a good guitar to do this plus shipping.

I still haven't forgiven him and his poseur ways.

Re: Fads

Being a bit of a relic,I can remember some truly dumb fads that the guitar magazine's of the day told us were going to change the world....

One that really leaps to mind was the " No. 1 Stretch Strap"!
Apparently we were all going to spend the 80's leaping around the stage with our axe of choice suspended on a giant rubber band. Hmmm.......

The Spin Strap was another gem. ZZTop have a lot to answer for!! Fortunately,I spent more time removing these from guitars than fitting them.

Headless everything!! In the 80's,the guitar world was taken over by headless guitars and basses. Steinberger started it and EVERYONE followed the fad. Gibson even came up with the 20/20 Bass,a headless bass - with a headstock!
99% of them sounded like absolute crap! Strangely, some folks still think they are cool. But then again, some folk still think Hoola Hoops and Pogo Sticks are cool....

Picks!! Multi Picks,Triple Picks,Speed Picks,Stylus Picks,The Strum Rose.....Bloody Hell!!! Seriously, most of us either use a standard flat pick or fingers. In the 90's,I would have people asking for the latest fad picks on a weekly basis. Then, when they sold their guitar, you would find a collection of these mysterious devices in the traps box in the case.

There are lots more from the "Good Ol Days",just pick up a copy of Guitar World from the mid 80's,particularly if your under 25 and some of this stuff is new to you,and you'll find pages of useless crap that guitarists apparently could never live without.
Somehow,we managed to survive without most of it....

One thing I thought was going to be a major fad was relic guitars. When I saw the first ones in the mid 90s,I thought " This is really cool",but soon they were cropping up everywhere and I thought it wouldn't last much longer.
Man,was I wrong!!!!! Every other guitar I build,I get asked if I can "relic it a bit" .

Cheers,PJ

Well, there are a lot of ergonomic advantages to headless instruments. Tuning stability and balance being 2 of them. But a lot of terrible headless instruments were produced, too.

Yeah, agree -ugly is the only thing I have against them

-functionally speaking -they are superior in most every way -especially the removal of the intermediate binding point by combining the nut and tuner into a fixed channel and zero fret.

Yeah, generally the looks is what most people object to. But I kinda dig designs where every aspect is thought out, as I find there is a certain beauty in the function aspect.

Re: Fads

Haha I completely blanked on that one and I was trying to think of a guitar part that might reasonably be called that

Dumb question -what market need are they filling?

If an amp can be effective and small -then a gigging musician is going to want that in a combo instead of lugging around 2 things right?. So I don't see it being a Club Gigging Live need.

If you want the flexibility of multiple cabinet options for recording, well a studio isn't going to pick a mini head over the usual suspects in their arsenal for tone for a legit recording. plus most modern combos have insert points, loops and speaker ext outputs -so I don't see it being a Studio need.

So what is it for? Dorm and Apartment home recording cuteness? Being able to saturate at low volumes? This reminds me of the Marshall Mini Stack Fad

I'm being sincere here - other than cute and small and neat to look at -What purpose dose it solve that a combo with good I/O doesn't meet and exceed?

Maybe I'm missing something obvious.

I've found a good lunch box amp with a good cab simulator (H&K Tubemeister is my best example) can be great for when you have to go straight into the soundboard.
