Hello,
I intend to buy a 7 string guitar in the near future, and I want mainly two things :
- Fanned fret /multiscale guitar because I love the idea / the sound of it
- Good sounding pickups
The problem is, what you can buy at the moment is either very expensive (1200$+), or comes with very basic EMG 808 or stock blade humbuckers, which I don't like. (example https://www.thomann.de/gb/jackson_dkaf7_ms_x_series_dinky.htm)
(Or they come with tilted pickups, which are not replaceable, like these https://goo.gl/images/dYDskC)
So I wanted to get a "cheap" fanned fret guitar and replace the crappy base pickups with high-end pickups, like Duncan's. For example, I love the sound of the Pegasus/Sentient combo (thanks, Keith Merrow), which are brutal, but also very clear and versatile. The problem is, the pickups on a fanned fret have to be tilted, and so they have to be either :
- With pole-pieces but slanted to be aligned with the strings, and I didn't find anything sold like that. (except custom pickups, which are too expensive for me)
- 8 string pickups simply put at an angle, which is easier to find. But then they have to be without pole-pieces because pole-pieces would not be aligned properly.
So, I thought I had to buy a guitar with 8 string pickups tilted, and then I would have to replace them with blade-like humbuckers, like Lace Xbar's, or Fishman Fluence, for example, which I like, but not as much as the Pegasus.
But then I saw two guitars with fanned fret and the Pegasus/Sentient combo
1) The Tosin Abasi signature when he was still with Seymour Duncan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwVtNqYVWZs
(now he is has Fishman's, I know that)
2) This Halo custom guitar https://reverb.com/item/1376027-halo-custom-guitars-octavia-7-string-guitar-fanned-fret-seymour-duncan-pegasus-sentient-pickups
and this one https://reverb.com/item/949339-halo-custom-guitars-merus-fanned-fret-7-string-guitar-seymour-duncan-pegasus-sentient-pickups
If these have pole-pieces, they must be misaligned. It should be a problem, or am I mistaken ? Or are these blade versions of the Pegasus/Sentient ?
I am very much interested in these Pegasus/Sentient for fanned fret guitars if they still exist.
