Hello all. Just wondering how many members here used or have used a crate blue voodoo, and if you liked it or disliked it and if you do still use one what is your setup with it.

Im just running my emg loaded paul into a dime wah and a ns-2 straight in for all out metal tone. Im very happy with the sound i get out of this thing but ive seen many others not enjoy its sound. Just want to hear some opionions

Funeral For a Friend usually use them live, they always got some nice tones from them, i did consider buying one myself but i settled on a Peavey 5150 instead.

Re: Fans of Crate Blue Voodoo

Yeah, I heard my friend play one against Marshalls in a Thin Lizzy trib and was quite impressed.

That being said, I still refuse to buy one.

Marshall first!

Re: Fans of Crate Blue Voodoo

Owned one and played many, the worst amps ever. yes they osund somewhat good but they are VERY unreliable.

Re: Fans of Crate Blue Voodoo

They give a buzzsaw gain that I like, but I still like Randall better.

Re: Fans of Crate Blue Voodoo

Unreliable hmm ive had mine for over two years now and haven't had a problem. Only thing ive done to it was swap out the stock preamp tubes and put some 12ax7c in it just to change the tone. Ive been happy with it but to each there own.

Re: Fans of Crate Blue Voodoo

Used to own one in the 90's (BV120H). Fried the circuit board 3 times within a span of 6 months. Fixed each time under warranty. It would feed back like a MF at high volumes, couldn't keep up with a Marshall 50 watt at all. Tone was really good at lower volumes but in a band situation, couldn't cut it. After the 3rd fix, it got sold and I bought the Marshall I still have today. I'm not much of a fan of them at all.

Maybe they fixed the reliability issues, maybe not. I'm not about to find out.

Owned a combo, played them extensively, heard them all over the local scene.

Can't. ****ing. Stand. Them.

It sounds to me like a ****ty 5150 knockoff - super buzzy, way too many high mids, oversaturated, shrill.

The cabinets are really good, though. V30's = \\m//

Well i can see where you don't like the buzzy sound as mine had that as well but when i put in the new preamp tubes it took a lot of that buzzy sound away for some reason, and mine seems to have an emphasis on the lower mids and isn't ice picky at all. Maybe I just got lucky.

You got lucky cuz I changed all the tubes in mine to 2 different kinds and nothing worked. And I had mine fixed twice then the guy I sold it to had it done 3 times!!! Piece of junk!

Trace @ Voodoo amps does some killer Blue Voodoo mods! :bigthumb:

I've never played one myself, but was fairly impressed with the one (and only one) I've heard. Guy didn't really have it setup for scoopy $hit though. It was a pretty "generic" LA metal type sound. Wasn't buzzy at all. He was playing through a MESA 4x12 cab...black shadows. I don't know what kind of tubes he had in it.

The older I get the more I realize you can get a good tone out of nearly anything...

You very well may not be able to get the tone you WANT out of a certain piece of gear, though :)

Quoted because it bears repeating.

Gear does not sound objectively good or bad. It simply helps you create tones you enjoy...or not.

For me, the BV falls into the "or not" category.
