Fast pull-offs over two strings ?

I'm not a big fan of Iron Maiden but I heard this song and wanted to play it

I have real troubles with that pull-off with a note on the next string each time. I can't work out an economic way to keep going back, and so I can't keep up (what is it, 2 or 3 notes a second?)

So I thought this might be a necessary change?

Of course it will sound different, but is the first one incorrect and just bad tabbing? I can't decide.

I'm not too good with tabs, but I do understand what your problem is. Personally I'd have more difficulty with your adaptation than the actual score, but that could be because I'm a robot sent from the future to rock on guitar!!! :)

I don't have a guitar here at work (otherwise I'd get nothing done), but let me give it a try on the imaginary guitar in my brain. I'll post again in a bit.

Ahh, my fave track off Iron Maiden.

What you want to do, is keep your first finger on the 15th fret through the whole lick. Use your little finger to do the 19-15 pull off, and use your second finger to fret the 17th fret on the B string.

Use an upstroke to pick the E string and a down stroke to pick the B string.

That's how I play it anyway

Yep, that'll do it. I was going to say third finger on the B-17, but either one is fine - go with whichever is most comfortable.

Re: Fast pull-offs over two strings ?

I know, that's how I thought the first tab should be played, this is what I was doing;

index on the 15 on e
middle on the 17 on B
pinkie on the 19th on e, pulling off each time

However, picking the 15 note, then picking the 17 note then coming back etc is too hard for me to do that fast, I suppose I must be hardwired to double picking? I think I understand what you're saying, attack the E string from the right, and the B string from the left? Hehe isn't that mad that I find it easier to do something the hard way? Story of my life.

Thanks for the help! Do you know, i've never had to play any riff like that ever?

That's a classic lick. You can find it in tons of songs such as Last In Line (Dio), Mr. Crowley (Ozzy), etc.

It's actually an easy lick to play because the picking is rather slow compared to the note output (2 picking, 3 notes). Downstroke on 19, pulloff on 15, and upstroke on 17, repeat lick with downstroke on 19...etc.

Not into any 80s heavy metal i'm afraid ^_^

I will have to get used to it as it's kind of a different technique again to single and double picking, it's almost like string skipping or something as it requires you to go back on yourself like an uncomfortable loop. I think maybe I've not had enough practice at anything so repetitive ^_~
I'm glad I learned something today!

Re: Fast pull-offs over two strings ?

I play those by economy picking it.. you can try but it takes some getting used to. You use your downpick to hit the b string, then with the same motion play the 19th fret on the e string. Really helps when those pull offs get pretty fast like on hallowed be thy name.

That's the spirit! Practice it until you can do it stone cold at 250 bpm!
