Fat humbucker tone. Replace DD with CC?

I have a DD in my Pacifica (alder, bolt-on) which I feel can be harsh and anemic running through the setup that I have right now.

Later down the track I'm thinking of a pickup replacement... I'm looking for a fatter and smoother tone. Not going overboard, but a significant difference is what I'm seeking.

The only thing that I have in my mind is a CC.

What do you guys think?

The CC is definately smoother than the DD. Another pickup to look at is the PATB Blues. It's supposed to be a "fat PAF" sounding pickup for guitars with trems.

The CC is more articulate - closer to PAF tone. I like both picukups but I'd say that the CC is smoother in terms of overall harmonics and balance.

OK, But the CC don´t have a TIGHT bass. ahahahahah

I want a CC with a tighter bass, same HIGHS, and a little bit backed off Mids, and MORE harmonics.
the good thing with the cc is that you can use it with BRIGHT guitars and it don´t turn into a FUZZYFEST, harshy, etc like the Jb does.

Maybe using a set of hex screws out of a Screamin Demon would tighten up the CC.

id put a regular duncan custom if i were you.
or an anderson H3(smoother highs) for total distruction mayhem.

The Custom isn't harsh exactly, but it does share some "fizz" to the highs that I've heard with other ceramic pickups under low gain OD.

Well if such a FAT humbucker than the DD is harsh in you guitar i would say change the guitar or you will never be happy and will spend a fortune in pickups ...

If a DD is 'harsh and anemic' in your rig, it would probably help to know more about your amp and effects. It's unlikely that the DD is the culprit, as it is anything but anemic, but could be considered harsh. What is the rig you're using?

i still suggest the CC.
but it´s not fat. but you can get a lot of good tones from rock to almost metal.

Great points Fab & Leather Rebel. I have a Cube 30 which through the best of guitars won't sound the best. I've used my guitar through other high quality tube amps and have come to the conclusion that it isn't anemic thin but it isn't smooth enough for my taste.

Whilst using the term anemic is more relevant when using my practise amp, I definitely am looking for something with a fatter and rounder lead tone.

If you want fatness get a Dimarzio ToneZone or a Breed .
They work in thin guitars .

If you like the output of the DD with more smoothness and don't require ultra-tight lows, you may try the JB. I've not found the JB to be harsh so long as it's wired-up with a tone control. It has fat mids and a singing lead tone, which sounds like what you're after. If you're into tinkering, you could swap out the large ceramic magnet in your DD with an Alnico 5 magnet. That's basically a JB and wouldn't cost you more than a few dollars for the magnet to test. There are lots of magnet-swapping threads on this site! Check it out. Good luck. :fingersx:
