Fat Strat; What to do with unused tone pot?

This is a question for all the wiring guru's on the forum (Artie, Lew, etc). Got a fat strat with humbuckers in all three positions. I have a 500k push/pull tone pot that is going to be coverted to a master tone control. The push/pull switch now adds the bridge bucker to all positions on the 5 way switch.

When I do the master tone mod I'll have an unused tone pot which seems like a waste. Would appreciate some suggestions to put this pot to use. I am aware of the spin-a-split and tone blender mods. Are there any others? Thanks.

Oh. I was going to suggest a spin a split.

You might try experimenting with inductors in place of the capacitor to create a high pass filtration circuit.

Or replace it with a 4 pole 6-way rotary switch for various coil combos.

Re: Fat Strat; What to do with unused tone pot?

Almost sorry to offer this... but anyway: I'd chuck the pot that's the closest to the bridge pup and move the other two pots one hole down, so that I've more room for my picking hand. See, I'm always turning my volume pot down on my regular Strat, because that darn volume control gets in my way. Not an exact answer to your question, I know ... but one that's supported with experience :)
Peace
Tony

Make it a blender pot so you can add your neck pickup to the bridge pickup when the 5 way switch is set for the bridge pickup or vice versa. It'll also let you have all three pickups on at the same time. Ditch the push/pull pot and go for a master volume, master tone and blender pot. Or use the push/pull pot to split the neck and bridge pickups. Lew

Good ideas from all of you. Thanks. Hey Lew....when you going to add wiring diagrams on your website?

I'd love to! I lack the computor skills to do it myself though. Lew

Hey Lew, I might be able to help with the diagrams. If your server supports php, a simple photo gallery script, either freeware or written by yours truly, would allow you to upload and add captions to images with a limited amount of geek-factor.

You could try a Lawrence Q-filter. It's supposed to morph high output pickups from fat through single-coil to acoustic, like taking winds off the pickup. Might be just the thing to clean up a 3 'bucker guitar.

The item in question: http://www.billlawrence.com/Pages/Pickup_Window/Q-Filter.htm

A thread devoted to describing how it works and sounds: http://p082.ezboard.com/fguitarsbyfenderfrm8.showMessage?topicID=16.topic

Now that's something new that I haven't seen before! Obviously I am not into vintage strat tones with my setup. I am thinking that the spin-a-split idea would just add a quack sound that I'm not looking for. The Q-filter sounds especially good for my JB jr neck pickup. Wonder if it works as good as advertised or if anybody has tried it?

Re: Fat Strat; What to do with unused tone pot?

I'd either go with Lew's blender pot (make sure to get a "no load" pot for that), or a bass cut like some of the G&L guitars.

My H/S/S guitar is wired with a master volume/master tone (treble cut)/master bass cut, and it's pretty useful. I like cranking up the bass a bit on the amp while rolling it back on the guitar until I want to get some big crunch.

Hope this helps,

You could go with a Q filter

An EMG SPC

Or and EMG EXG
