Re: Fat, thick, bridge pickups ?
I know, but I like the "feel" of high-output pickups when playing shreddy lines. I like some compression from the pickup and I like the feel of the pickup slammin the front end of the amp. It's more of a "feel thing" than a "tone thing".
How is your picking accuracy? I noticed you named a lot of players that I like and from what you have stated I think we even have similar playing styles in that when we are playing we mainly like playing leads. The reason I ask about your pick accuracy or maybe technique is because you seem to have used some of the best pups...that even your inspirations use..and they get the sound out of them.
One thing I think you said (on another thread) is that pup tone doesn't matter (at least I think it was you) but I kind of understand this statement because a lot of the sound and tone is generated in how the strings are fretted and pic'd. But there is definetly different tones in pups too.
From my experience with my Kramer Baretta people used to tell me it sounded killer when I had the stock schaller PAF in it....and that was 25 years ago playing through a PV solid state amp and only a Digitch Digital Delay.
But later I found something missing and dropped in a Custom Custom. The leads sounded killer with the Custom Custom...but I wondered if it was just my opinion.....then I decided to try a Distortion because I read George Lynch used it on the earlier Dokken stuff. I put the DD in my Kramer and have never really been satisfied with it. When I play fast it doesn't sound like my CC did or what I remember the Schaller PAF sounding like. But George Lynch on Tooth & Nail played pretty fast and it sounds killer...if he was using a DD in that ESP.
Interestingly I like my CC in my ESP..but it is a cheapy ESP H-50...but it sounds pretty **** good with the CC in it.
I am not wanting to be on a constant pup change mission because I want to just focus on playing. Not discussing pups all day.
But it seems like the A2 is the choice for the good better lead guitar players. If you look at what pups it's in. The CC for VH, Warren DiMartini and George Lynch's signature series pups...they used the A2s.
Thinking there must be something to the A2 for lead players.
I don't necessarrily want to stick an A8 in just because it is the latest craze. There is no A8 audio sample (alternative 8). I was thinking of A8 changes in all of my current pups. CC, DD, and PAF.
