Favorite 1-12 combo?

Gearjoneser

Gear Ho
I want to hear from everyone who has a 1-12 combo they would be confident using as a main amp. I'm considering a few different ones, but I think I always prefer 2 channel amps, since it's nice to have a built in lead channel. I also want to hear from those who have a single channel, and which OD pedals work well with it.

Re: Favorite 1-12 combo?

I have my peavy ultra 112 w/ 3 channels, I use the boss sd-1 with it. It may be a peavey but it still is good. :chairfall

cheers, Brandon

Re: Favorite 1-12 combo?

I've been using my Crate MX65R for a couple of years as a main amp, with a 1x12 cab for extra 'oomph', if needed (it's usually a disengaged amp stand for the combo).

I love it cuz it's an out-of-the-box play and easy to replace. Since I use the amps' lead channel, they've made the speaker as a custom to the preamp and I must say, it's killer!

It's open back cab design (the combo) I like cuz it allows my sound to breathe more, and if you like it tight like me, you don't need the extra tightness of a closed back cab, per my taste.

Sorry, I can't help you with the OD pedal ish, I just use what the amp came with, which is plenty for me.

Re: Favorite 1-12 combo?

Some people scoff at Peavey, but they've always made good combo amps......well at least after they ditched the ones with the silver panels and Saturation knob!

One of the best clean tones I've ever heard was on a Peavey Classic 50 4-10 with 4 JJ EL-84's. That's an amp I wish I still had.

Re: Favorite 1-12 combo?

The V32 Palomino really surprised by the first time I plugged into it. With a good speaker, that thing is pretty kickin'! If you liked the Peaveys GJ, you should definitely like those.

Re: Favorite 1-12 combo?

I've got a Fender Blues Junior. It's a little boxy at first, but the speaker needs to break in. Plus, about $10 in new mods and a new set of tubes and you have a whole different amp. Everything just sounds fuller and better. 15w all tube. If you don't need reverb/EQ/master volume, there's also the Pro Junior. Don't expect much headroom out of it.

Re: Favorite 1-12 combo?

Deluxe Reverb..........why would you need an overdrive pedal with one anyway?:fingersx: I haven't heard one of the old 1x12 Brown Vibroluxes, but I would like to:laugh2:

I like expensive amps like my Matchless Chieftain a lot, but it's a very loud 40W amp. It can sound bigger than a Marshall halfstack, but in a fat clean way.

Yesterday, I plugged into the Crate V32 and it wasn't too bad for an affordable amp, but man, that speaker has got to go! If I buy anything, it'll probably be a midpriced boutique, because anything more expensive would require me to part with something I love. I sold the Bassman LTD because it was way too loud and clean, and is still beat by the Matchless. I'll probably find something like a Dr. Z, Fender Supersonic, or Gibson Goldtone. Ideally, it would be a Shiva combo on the cheap.

Oh, by far:

Under $1000

Reverend Kingsnake:

If you can afford it: for $3000:

In my opinion, the best clean sounding amp I have ever played through in my life:
Bruno Cow Tipper 45 1X12 combo with reverb (there are many configurations and powers)
http://www.brunoamps.com/c45price.htm

Distortion and OD:

again, by far:
Barber Tone Pump (light to medium overdrive)
Barber Burn Unit (searing Marshall Crunch)
(actually, ALL David's boxes are great. They sound like god through the Bruno Cowtipper. Just choose your flavor- and they are half the price of many boxes that aren't half as good)...

2nd on the list, Lovepedal Eternity
http://lovepedal.com/eternitysquare.htm

Have a Hermida Zendrive on order for the last year or two......

Still waitin.....

You can pick up a Reverend Kingsnake on eBay if you pray and are patient. New they were about $799 (a steal). They are discontinued and are collectors items but pop up on eBay every now and then I have seen em pricey but also have seen em sanely priced. A GREAT and versitile sounding amp (great clean and GREAT 70's Marshall type distortion - no lie). And they weigh only 32 lbs for 60 watts of all tube power (including tube reverb).

Peace. :D

Re: Favorite 1-12 combo?

a Mesa Blue Angel!! No master volume, and even at the 18 watt setting, you need a tube screamer to distort it- ive done festivals with this amp (doing one this weekend) and it always sounds great.

Re: Favorite 1-12 combo?

For some reason Bruno's are hard to find on the west coast, but I'd love to try some of those out. My sound is pretty much strats into British style amps, so maybe a Mojave, Germino, or some sort of low powered EL-34 combo would be cool.

Yea, I hear ya bro. Tony is from the East coast. They are on eBay and The Gear Page. Or you can order them direct.

The only reason I even mentioned them is that I remember you have some pretty high end gear. If you can afford a Bruno, absolutely look into it. I wish I could afford a Cowtipper...... The tube reverb in Tony's amps is THE best. There is no comparasin with any amp I have ever tried. Ever. Three knob, all tube reverb circuit. Better than the best classic, vintage, stand alone Fender reverb units.

Again, if it is something you can afford, the right Bruno amp is in a class by itself. There are amps that are more expensive, but not better to these ears....

Re: Favorite 1-12 combo?

I used to own a Hughes & Kettner Tube 50. 50 watts, EL34, two channel with a boost on both channels. The clean channel only had a master volume and EQ and stayed perfectly sparkling clean at any volume, the boost on the clean channel had its own gain pot. The distorted channel had a nice, transparent and rather mild but very usable crunchy tone, but the boost mode (with no gain pot of its own) totally kick ass! Nice and chunky, and very tight if you want. The combo was a bit bright and had lots of mids, but I was very fond of that. Over here, they sometimes pop up secondhand for prices around 350-500 Euros (app. 400-600 US dollars I guess). That was a very nice amp. I know one for sale right now, actually, and even considered buying it.

Re: Favorite 1-12 combo?

Hard to go wrong with a Mesa. There's a lot to choose from:

Mark IIC+
Mark III Simul-Class with EQ, EVM, and REV
Mark IV
F-30 or F-50
Nomad 45 or 55
Maverick 112
DC-3 or DC-5
Recto-Verb
Rocket 44
Blue Angel

The Mark I, SOB, .22 Caliber, .50 Caliber, and Mark II-B amps are not among my favorites, so I won't recommend those. But it is clear that Mesa started the high-power 112 channel switching combo concept.

I own a Mark III, a Mark IV and a DC-3, and a 212 Maverick combo. I really like the idea a 112 combo, sitting on top of the Mesa 112 EVM Theile cab.

Re: Favorite 1-12 combo?

My Blue Angel is a head, but I've used the 1x12s as well and they're good amps. Very good with pedals, too.

I had the opportunity to give a Victoria tweed twin clone a good test run late last year, and that was pretty damn impressive. I'd rate Fender's bassbreaker as a cool variation, a bit more rock'n'roll and gutsy. The deluxe reissue is a very cool amp, as well.

i know it's not 1x12, but my choice for bang v buck is the Peavey Delta blues. Very good for the money. The chinese AC30 1x12 isn't bad, either. It'd be better with a speaker swap.

Very keen to try the supersonic...

I'm not a big 1x12 kinda' guy, but the TECH21NYC Trademark 60 is a damn fine little package:bigthumb:

Re: Favorite 1-12 combo?

I don't own either one of these but I played them.

Zinky Blue Velvet 25.
Mission Aurora 18 Watt (the 30 Watt is killer too)
