Re: Favorite big bottle or small bottle tubes....
Small bottles - but not the kind you're asking about.
As a play-at-home type, I doubt I'll own an amp over 20 watts again. So I'm playing a kludged-together 18 Watter clone. It's amazing how well EL84s do the "Marshall sound" in this amp.
Even the modest wattage this thing cranks out is too much, so I'm building another with TINY output tubes - 6K6 7-pin pentodes for about 5 watts. Cute little things.
After years of amplifiying preamp distortion with oversized, turned-down-to-2, clean, big-bottle (6550) power amps, I have seen the light: small amps and output-stage overdrive rule.
As much as we all love 6L6's and/or EL34's, I can't imagine ever needing them in an amp again.
