Favorite distortion/overdrive pedal?

Re: Favorite distortion/overdrive pedal?

For me, the tubescreamer. Ts-808 or Ts-9, they're both quite pricey but very good pedals.

Dude, when you come out, we're gonna play everything -- you will have a field day! :)

Of course man ;) I'd be disappointed if we didn't play the hell out of every guitar, amp and pedal that we can find :D

Re: Favorite distortion/overdrive pedal?

for my "live" rig i don't use any pedals asside from a floor tuner and a EVH phase 90 wah no OD or distortion...i just use the amps (peavey ultra plus) distortion which can be mild or insane whatever you want, no need for a pedal. but with my atomic amp and pod XT i use the tube screamer alot on my patches...so does that count hehehe. i am considering getting a ts9 for a bit of a lead boost for live use though.

Re: Favorite distortion/overdrive pedal?

For overdrive: Keeley modded Ibanez TS-9, for a stack-in-a-box: Carl Martin PlexiTone, and for metal: Digitech Metal Master.

Re: Favorite distortion/overdrive pedal?

Distortion pedals I want:

SD tweak fuzz
modded sparkle drive
expandora Bixonic II Distortion

Now that would be a versitile chain.

Yeah, I'm not really looking to get the pedal for MORE distortion persay. I find the Tubescreamer (after trying it out) when used on the dirty channel gives it a little more in fullness and tonal qualities without breaking up and getting muddy.

Re: Favorite distortion/overdrive pedal?

I can't pick just one. There are two pedals on my pedalboard that go beyond the common conceptions of pedals

The Clay Jones Overdrive. Thick, compressed, fat lead voicings at low volumes... insane for blues riffs and jazz/fusion type stuff... with some tweaking I can get some Robben Ford

The Pro Analog Dual Drive. Fulltone Fulldrive, except ultra transparent and boutique. The clean channel is a great transparent booster and the overdrive channel can dial is some serious tones. Through my Vibrolux Reverb, it's pure SRV and with the Marshall JTM-45 channel on my Fargen Epic 30 DC, it creates one of the smoothest fattest lead tones I've ever heard. The sustain is amazing!

Re: Favorite distortion/overdrive pedal?

I'll tell you what I like about my personal faves:

TS-9, It's the one overdrive everyone ought to own. Great sound, flexible. Might run a little lite on the OD for some. Get the turbo version if this is you. I love it as is!

Stamps Drive-O-Matic, My absolute favorite these days. 2 levels of od, presence control, and a tight/loose switch. I like using that with my fender pro jr. I can set up clean/slight breakup/drive/over-drive tones. Goes firther than the ts-9.

Boss Hm-2, Don't laugh. I call that pedal MR. Growley. It's way less of a Heavy Metal pedal in my opinion than a basic rock distortion. I do a lot of ZZ top with that!

Washburn Stack-in-a-box, 4 (count'em) stage FET distortion. Totally underated. I can get an ultra Marshall tone with that thing. Should be cheap if you can find one.

Boss Metal Zone, probably my favorite all around metal sound.

Re: Favorite distortion/overdrive pedal?

Lovepedal Eternity = fat & warm
BSM OR treble booster = bright & silky

The Lovepedal is truly outrageous. Comes with 2 distinct interchangeable IC's. The fat chip sounds strikingly similar to a cranked Tweed Bassman. The hot chip has more edge, but I prefer the fat chip.

The BSM adds a bright crunch to the sound. The schematic is very similar to a Dallas Rangemaster. The BSM uses an OC76 transistor and the Rangemaster uses an OC44. Really great with the Strat & Bogner Metropolis. Somewhat of a Jeff Beck Wired type of tone (even though the Orange Treble and Bass Booster was made famous by David Gilmour).

With either one, I usually roll the volume on the guitar a lot. They're both wonderful.

Re: Favorite distortion/overdrive pedal?

I have a TS-9, but I would go with my Chandler Tube Overdrive. I have the rackmount version.

Re: Favorite distortion/overdrive pedal?

Add me to the list of TS-9/TS-808 users. I almost always use it as a boost for solo's. I also like the TC/Electronic line driver which has both boost and distortion modes but I always use boost. In general I dont like my distortion to come from a pedal I like it from my amp and I use pedals to boost or colour the amps distortion. I used to use an Ibanez SM-9 for good buzzy punk tones, it sounded pretty good I just wished it didnt drop of so much bass and the highs were a bit smoother.

Re: Favorite distortion/overdrive pedal?

My favorite is the Marshall Jackhammer JH-1. It has two channels, OverDrive and Distortion but I mainly stick to the OD.. the distortion is abit muddy and thick for my likeing. The OD channel is perfect for your monster Metallica, Megadeth, Maiden riffs but admittedly it is quite hard to get a decent lead tone out ofit.
The two step (i made that up.. dunno what they're really called) dials allow for an infinate range of tones from a bluesey overdrive to a heavy metal distortion... its built like a bomb shelter and for only £49!! Bargian.
I prefer this pedal to my Boss ones... I find the boss effects to sound very artificial and computer generated... just doesn't sound natural.
