SAVAGE DISTORTION

New member
Pick who you like the most for reviewing duncan pickups?
I will go first, i prefer ZENMINDBEGINNER's reviews overall since he tends to really detail all the things about the pu's that i find important.

Re: Favorite Duncan p'u reviewer?

Wait, I made a list? LOL. A list? That is an odd thing. I have never reviewed a SD pickup. I have only demoed them and who on the SD board finds clean country demos exciting? Haha!!
I have an actual video review in the works. It is long though because there is considerable dialogue.

If I were to vote for myself, I would choose brother Zen and Danny together. Geoff needs to do more demos. Unfortunately 'cover' material cannot go on SD channels so Geoffs work has not had the exposure he deserves.

Silly poll.

Cheers!

Re: Favorite Duncan p'u reviewer?

didn't zen do the great review and video of the different JBs? i voted for him based on that.

Re: Favorite Duncan p'u reviewer?

Invalid poll. No Rob Option.

Re: Favorite Duncan p'u reviewer?

I like all of them, but I got to say Zen is more my kind of player.

Re: Favorite Duncan p'u reviewer?

When you say "review", it looks like people might be also referencing guys that also just do demo work. And under which media? Blog? Video? Audio? Forum?

Re: Favorite Duncan p'u reviewer?

This thread is too limited in scope. I'm not making any accusations here because what I know of SavageDistortion has been good things, but some may perceive a thread like this as kind of an ego massage for certain friends. There are a lot of great reviewers on the forum. Like Darthphineas said, some people only do audio demos. There are too many things to consider with audio demos or reviews. For instance, I just don't think that audio recorded using effects processors are useful to anyone using tube amps. Also, audio is often recorded with mismatched gear or contributing factors such as amp demos that use active pickups, wah or other effects, etc...

A good review, from my perspective, is something thoughtfully written that describes tone and compares and makes familiar references. The best reviews are the ones which provide written reviews + audio and a bonus would be pics too. This thread is disappointing as there are many contributors on this forum.

Re: Favorite Duncan p'u reviewer?

Well. I wasn't trying to throw a wrench into the works or anything. I think this is a fun idea, but maybe done more comprehensively.

Yeah, and that's what I meant as well. I think it's a good idea to see what people think about the reviews, but it just needs to be expanded.

Re: Favorite Duncan p'u reviewer?

I wish it was a SDUGF popularity contest because my posse is a lot larger than Danny's. lolz

Rodney, Danny and Keith are "guitar hero" types. I'm just a "guy next door" type and will always lack the technical skills that those guys have... it's just the reality of the situation.

Even though I've been playing guitar since I was 10 or 11, I took off playing between 1997-2007. I'll never get those years back and I don't have the natural speed and agility that the great players have.

I'm just an ordinary guy but maybe had some early skills and was pretty good for a 14 year old or whatever back when I was younger.

It's still a work in progress and to be honest with everyone... I'm not really sure where my guitar playing is even going these days.

The only thing I really know is that I feel pretty damn lucky to be loosely associated with Seymour Duncan. For an ordinary guy like me, it is almost too good to be true and I pinch myself a lot.

So, do I walk around with a chip on my shoulder thinking that every video I do might be my last and everyone will find out that I am a fraud and a lousy guitar player? Are we being honest?

Hell yeah I do. That doesn't mean that I'll stop trying to do my best on every demo I am allowed to do... I just stress out a bit and constantly feel outclassed and outgunned. lolz

And does this poll freak me out and make me feel really uncomfortable? Yes.

The youtube numbers don't lie though... Danny Young SMOKES my videos and Rodney Gene has a flawless record compared to the rather widely varied and colorful public reactions to my videos.

Do I constantly suffer from confidence issues? Yes, I'm a little off that way and I wish it could be easily addressed with approval but I just don't think it can. Approval makes me uncomfortable and disapproval kills me.

So, I love you guys and to the 5 fellows who voted for me... you guys are very giving and kind men with huge hearts. If I can do something for you, just let me know.

I would feel a lot less uncomfortable if this poll sort of had a life span of only a few more days or maybe even less?

I have got to stop kvetching in public... I'm so sorry everyone.

Re: Favorite Duncan p'u reviewer?

Well,
I did vote other, but not to sound like an assk***er, obviously there are many great choices, but I gotta single out Lt. Kojak (Pepe) because he builds, plays, sells, and always seems to answer in an even keel way without sounding like a know it all. His advice and comments have much weight with me and so I consider him a great reviewer, video or not.
My 2 cents

Re: Favorite Duncan p'u reviewer?

I gotta vote for all of these guys - they all have immense talent in their respective areas. Danny is just such an incredible player (come see him at our booth during NAMM), Geoff can make any guitar sing and is a true artist (his JB/'78 and Super V videos set the bar), Rodney Gene's playing just makes you want to listen over and over again! And all three of these guys are phenomenal people outside of being so talented.

Yes, you're correct these are demos - though some of Geoff's were done on his own and are 'reviews' and more technical. Rodney has some great more technical videos coming up as well he has finished. There are also some great reviewers on this forum even if it doesn't include a clip some people here are really good at describing the strengths and weaknesses of individual pickups. There are lots of people that could be added to this list as well.

Re: Favorite Duncan p'u reviewer?

I refrain from doing/watching pup reviews because there's so much variation at play with the demo-er's guitar, amp, mic preamp, DAW, etc... versus everyone else's (and my own). And I simply cannot recommend "X" pickup (unless the other dude's gear matches closely with my gear) - because while it may sound great with one particular guitar and rig, it might not with some dude and his (insert rig of choice.. e.g. "DOD Death Metal + Guitar Rig setup").

All I can really, honestly and technically say is, "it sounds great in my rig".

those are very good points, LTF. and while it's a bit unusual/unorthodox for this necrobump from over 4 months ago, it's hard to really pick any one person. there are so many variables involved. I do think the demos that zen was doing were great promotional tools and clearly brought people to have different perspective of some CS models they might not have otherwise seen. it's my opinion is was just a bad decision to let that opportunity with zen not develop. my experience is that zen is a much more loyal guy that some deserve.

but very much like you are suggesting, LTF, we do really have to consider a lot of things...which is why I'd have to be my own best reviewer. yeah, I know, I stopped posting my reviews about 6 months ago...although I do continue to try out new models. it's hard work to try to share things with people when there is the risk of any knucklehead coming along behind you and posting wrongs specs or otherwise misinforming people with inaccurate comments. but...like the waves that come crashing in and out, like along the coast at Big Sur, people like that come and go while the ones that are rock steady remain behind to continue to be the foundation.

Rumour has it that all that technical stuff is irrelevant. Apparently it's all in the way you hold your mouth.
